Syria, United Allegiance Middle Eastern Central Command...
A new day was upon the United Allegiance armies of the Middle East, for another consecutive day, the troops took up defensive positions and awaited any attack by Joint Pact troops. Of course none came... For the United Allegiance had set up their defenses in a particular manner that it would be impossible for the base and front line to be breached. The defenses were on the edge of a desert, sure the Joint Pact could travel through the desert to attack, however they would have to cope with large amounts of mines and constant artillery fire, flying past and parachuting troops was also not such a smart idea either... But the a counter attack to drive the enemy back was never ordered... Why? Because this force was made primarily of Italian forces...
Yes, while most of the United Allegiance was focusing on the European Front, Italy had been given the role of overseeing the Middle Eastern Theater. When Feliciano had asked his fellow nations on what to do they simply said "Defend Israel", that order had been issued seven months ago and Feliciano was still doing just that: Sitting down and repelling whatever came to attack. Some may call it laziness, Feliciano called it a break from the war, "The United Allegiance forces in the Middle East don't launch counter attacks on days starting with T...Tuesday, Thursday and Today." Feliciano remembered desert warfare during World War II, the constant logistics was extremely annoying, well at least he controlled Germany's Afrika Korp.* So to avoid all the hassle of war, all the troops had to do was sit and wait till the Allegiance broke through on the European front. Feliciano felt, that to the United Allegiance the war in the Middle East was just a distraction or a way to get Feliciano away from Europe, and he didn't mind this... not one bit.
Recently, Feliciano had been told of some more equipment and a "special person" going to the front. He was glad that he could possibly have another nation to talk to, they'd have time for that seeing that the front was practically a stalemate: the Joint Pact couldn't break through but the United Allegiance wouldn't attack. Seeing several large planes landing on the base's run way. Feliciano didn't notice the markings on the planes were in fact German, he was actually distracted by the female soldiers nearby but when he saw the door open and a figure walk out from the first plane he started waving... Little did he know that the Italian force's Middle Eastern holiday may have just ended... Particularity if the German military had analyzed the military situation for the last seven months.
* The German Afrika Korps in World War II, that assisted the Italians in Africa, actually needed permission from Italian High Command to move large numbers of troops... Well that makes sense seeing that the Italians made up most troops in Africa.

Most people would assume that Germany would be very angry at this point. But he isn't. When he got the report that prompted this visit, instead he felt... tired. Just because he's good at war doesn't mean that he enjoys it. Yes, he may enjoy parts of it, sometimes, but on the grand scale of things he'd rather never be in another war again. Instead he finds himself in this global conflict that has lasted for far too long - so many years of constant management to keep himself and his allies safe. It's exhausting just to think about it and there is no sign of it ending any time soon.
But one of the things that he needs to manage is his fellow nations who... well, they're not him. Put him in a battlefield, give him men and supplies, and he'll manage them well and accomplish things with them. A few of the other nations in Europe will also do so as well. But then there are the others... Now, Germany didn't want to accuse his friend of mismanaging his resources, so he took the time to have his military examine the situation. After all, he's well aware that just because you give someone what should be enough men and resources to move forward doesn't mean that they actually can - he's been in situations himself where he was well supplied, but due to other factors in the situation he couldn't move forward. However, he wasn't surprised when the report came back that it wasn't the situation here.
In fact, he partly blames himself for the situation. He's known Feliciano for a very long time - he knows that he needs to keep an eye on him. He ought to have checked on him before now, but on the other hand he's been extremely busy. With so many different demands on his attention, the fact that this front has been a bit too quiet is something easy to miss. But not forever.
Of course, just because he isn't angry that doesn't mean that he doesn't look angry. As he exits the plane, he immediately scans the crowd of people for the one in particular he is here to talk to. Seeing the wave, he alters course immediately to walk toward him. He doesn't wave back, smile, or make any sign of being happy to see his old friend - instead his mouth is set in a flat line. And rather than stopping at the proper distance to say hello, instead he walks past the other nation and toward the center of the camp, saying, "Come with me - we have a lot of work to do."

When it was Germany he saw walking out of the plane, Feliciano was overjoyed. Now they could sit on their asses together! The fact that Germany was here in safety instead of a foxhole in Poland made him feel relieved, now the two of them could sit this war out and relax! Feliciano was pretty sure that the rest of the United Allegiance could handle the war while the two drunk alcohol, flirt with the ladies and just lay back and watch time go by.
As Germany walked past, the only words he said were: "Come with me - we have a lot of work to do." Feliciano was even more happy, Germany seemed to be in a good mood today... Feliciano wasn't being screamed at or given a lecture today, maybe things will turn out just fine. Surely, he had made Germany proud here, ever since his stationing, they had not loss any ground here and they were in perfect form. Feliciano then tried to make a conversation with his best friend. "Ve~ Hello to you to Germany! How are you? How was the trip? You see any nice ragazze on the way? You want pasta? We have lots of pasta! It's nice to see that you have found your way here! Speaking about that what brings you here? Oh I know! You came here because we have booze! Si? Is that right? What am I saying of course it's right!"

Not stopping even when addressed, Germany continues to walk toward the camp, forcing Italy to match his quick steps if he wants to keep up and continue to talk to him. He listens with surprising patience as Italy rambles out several so assumptive questions. When they end, he chooses to address them in order.
"I am doing vell. The trip vas long and tiresome, but I got some rest. And no, I vasn't paying any attention - I vas mentally revieving my plans for vhen I arrived here," he says first, "And no, I'm not hungry - ve have a lot of vork to do, and I'm here prepared to vork. But perhaps ve can have some pasta later. And it's good to see you too, Italy! I vish ve had some more time to socialize than ve do. Because nein, I am not here to drink. Like I said, ve have a lot of vork to do."
He abruptly stops, and wraps an arm around Italy, pointing at the camp. "Ve are going to move all of this, and put it all over there," he says, slowly moving his finger from the camp and shifting it to point out into the desert, just a little over the horizon as if to indicate that the position that he actually means is well out of sight.
Which will be quite an undertaking, not just logistically from the standpoint of moving so many men and assets but also because that would most certainly put them into direct conflict with their enemies. In other words, this will shift this front from being a fairly peaceful standoff into a much more active front in the war. It will be a logistical nightmare, but that's why Germany is here. He's seen the numbers - of soldiers and supplies and everything else they would need to advance this front, and he knows that they can pull it off. He just needs to convince Italy to work with him. Which is probably the other reason why he's come here instead of sending anyone else - he can probably get Italy to cooperate better than anyone.

You could call Italy a little lazy or irresponsible, but you were far from the truth if you called him an idiot or a coward. The second Germany got of that plane, Italy knew what was going to happen and he didn't like it... not one bit. Sure his forces had made next to no progress in the campaign, but if the enemy were held back wasn't that a tactical success? He had hoped to try an divert Germany's attention from the war and it seemed to have been working... until the German stopped and wrapped an arm around him.
"Ve are going to move all of this, and put it all over there," As he pointed towards the horizon... In the direction of the desert. Italy could already see the logistical nightmare in front of the two men: movement of troops, the supply of water and food to armaments and communications with other forces... The Axis defeat in North Africa in World War II, was an example of what could happen if logistics on one side failed... and Italy did not want to relive that horror again. Sure the front was quite static compared to the other fronts in the world, it did have its moments of excitement time to time, but at least it could guarantee a peace of mind for the men.
Italy was not afraid of disagreeing nor refusing to carry out Germany's orders, what he was afraid of was the impact it would have on their friendship. However, Italy had changed this front from what could have been the worst front of the war, to a more relaxing and soon forgotten part of the war when the history books recorded the Third World War.
"Er, Germany?" It could possibly make Germany reconsider this plan if he acted stupid or at least disorganized. "What do you mean we are going to move all of this there?" Italy truly did fear if Germany was actually going to consider advancing on the Joint Pact, hopefully his charade of obliviousness would mask this or at least make Germany rest for the day. "Are you sure you don't want to relax first Germany? It must have been a long flight from Europe to here?"

Given how long the two of them have been friends, Germany has had the opportunity to learn a thing or two about Italy and how he thinks. He knew that his friend would balk at the very idea of doing the thing that he's here to do. And he's not going to let a bit of playing dumb dissuade him from it either. It's very important for this front to move, and so it will be moved. Even if he has to drag Italy along kicking and screaming about it, it will be done - he's a very stubborn person when he sets his mind to do something, and he's set his mind to doing this.
"Vhat part of vhat ve're doing are you unclear about?" he asks, sounding patient even as he further underlines the fact that it's going to happen. He is happy to explain until Italy can no longer pretend that he doesn't understand.
And he's also not about to delay in getting started. "Ja - as I said, the trip vas boring. I vas able to rest on the plane - nov I am ready to vork. But if you need a siesta, I can get started vithout you and you can join me in a couple of hours," he says, giving his friend an offer that is no doubt a bit of a catch-22. On the one hand, Italy has just been given permission to go do nothing for a couple of hours. On the other hand, Italy should know by now just how much someone with Germany's level of efficiency is able to accomplish if allowed to work uninterrupted for a couple of hours - they'll be packed up and ready to go by tomorrow if he isn't careful.

Unfortunately, it seemed Germany was not going to budge moving out into the desert. This was both depressing and unnecessary. If Israel was being defended successfully then the objective was being accomplished! Italy already pushed the front from Israel's borders to the middle of Syria and a small part of Iraq, during those times there had been a lot of advancing, this was mostly due to the fact, that the enemy were retreating after the initial failure to breach Israel.
When Italy thought that they were in a strong position to defend from counter attacks the mobile war ended... and it was replaced by static warfare. They couldn't just move out! It was homely in the base!
"What am I not clear about? Ve~ Where are we going? Does this restaurant have pasta or pizza?" While Germany was happy to explain until Italy could no longer pretend to not understand. Italy was happy to continue playing stupid until Germany inevitably wasted time explaining to Italy something he already knew.
So he had been offered to screw around for a few hours... Eccellente! If Germany just ignored his question or simply refused to be delayed any further he could play football and do so many unproductive things! Oh and he had to have a meeting with his commanders. They were going to have to make some plans to return back to base while the Germans advanced in the desert...

Of course, there's a difference between explaining things and answering questions that are simply too irrelevant to merit a response - that is something that Germany does not do. So rather than answering the question about a restaurant, he simply acts as if the question hadn't been asked in the first place - because it shouldn't have been. Instead he answers the question that Italy should have asked but didn't, as that's a much better use of his time.
"I am giving the men I brought vith me a half hour break. After that ve vill take an hour and a half to conduct a basic inspection of the camp - just to make sure that our records of the camp's assets are accurate. But after that, ve vill be having a vorking lunch - I vill be treating you and your generals to a special meal fresh from Europe vhile I explain to all of you vhy ve need to move the camp. And I vould suggest that you arrive on time - I am confident that the best food vill disappear very quickly," he states.
And, having said that, he then turns and begins to walk again. He's told Italy everything that the man absolutely has to know at this point, so if he doesn't follow that's fine. But if his friend has any further questions, comments, complaints, or attempts to distract him from his purpose then he can attempt to keep up with him while he goes to the middle of the camp.

Now was the time to definitely be afraid. Germany came here for one job... fight. Not only was this fact irritating but it was also quite reckless of Germany, who knows what the Joint Pact had on the other side of that desert. As Germany rambled on about meetings (which Italy couldn't care less about) the mention of food immediately brought him out of his dream world. Germany was treating him and his generals... fresh food from Europe... Oh oh.
Italy could see it now... wurst... oh that was the worst. As Germany walked off Italy poked his tongue at Germany's back, well he can take his European food back with him! I've got my pasta! Italy knew one way to stop Germany, although it probably jeopardized the chances of winning the front, it was still very much worth it! Italy ran quickly to the communications area where the loud speakers were controlled.
"MI SCUSI OPERATOR! WE HAVE TO RETREAT! THE ENEMY HAVE GOT umm... NUKES, SI NUKES AND THEY ARE GOING TO DESTROY THE CAMP!!! WE HAVE TO RETREAT!!!!!" Immediately the radio operator screamed on the speaker: "ALL UNITS RETREAT! ALL UNITS RETREAT! A NUCLEAR BOMB HAS JUST BEEN LAUNCHED UPON THE CAMP!"
The camp descended into absolute chaos... Italy soon reached the middle of the camp, where running Italians were everywhere... And they were taking everything with them, from pianos, crates of pasta, weapons, a washing machine? Some were even hiding in fridges due to the fact that the movies said something about refrigerators being nuke proof? Oh yes Indiana Jones... America made some weird movies... Stuff that was even hidden was soon being uncovered, such as large wine casks, a ridiculous amount of money, a hidden military brothel not even Italy knew about and a hot air balloon?
Anyway... all this chaos was what Italy needed, he quickly went to run through the middle of the camp towards the jeeps. He could make his escape in some remote village and then he wouldn't need to suffer through... a meeting about war logistics... He was 20 meters away from the jeeps... yes, he was so close to freedom!

Actually, Germany had used his knowledge of his friend's tastes to put together a lovely meal that Italy was sure to enjoy (in fact he brought a Kuchen he baked himself). The man had written a song about how delicious his food was, in fact. Or at least the food was mentioned, anyways.
However, it seems like only moments after his friend leaves his side that an alarm is raised over the camp. Now, Germany has been painstakingly analyzing this front for quite some time. Is it possible that they're actually being nuked? Yes. But it's also extremely unlikely. This is an important front, but there are much better targets for a nuclear attack if their enemies wanted to escalate the war in such a fashion. And seeing as he just told Italy about the meeting... Yes, he can guess what's really going on here.
Which is why he doesn't panic. But he does have a choice: what is more important for him to do right now? Confront Italy about this or calm down the camp? On the one hand, the camp will calm down without him eventually - they'll discover that the warning was false eventually. And with that being the case, perhaps he's free to pursue his friend? He can guess that the man would try to leave camp now, probably by going for one of the jeeps because they're not too far away...
On the other hand, how long will it take for the camp to calm down? This is a very important front of the war, and if their enemies catch wind of this panic and try to use it to their advantage...
He heads for the communications area, heading straight for the unfortunate Italian who made the announcement in the first place. Yes, he knows that when someone's very own nation speaks to them they're very convincing and difficult to argue with, at least if they're a reasonably patriotic person, but Germany doesn't need to be Italy in order to get an Italian to do what he wants. "VHO MADE THAT ANNOUNCEMENT?!? VHO ORDERED THE RETREAT?!? DID YOU VERIFY THE INFORMATION BEFORE YOU BROADCAST IT TO THE ENTIRE CAMP? VHAT KIND OF A RADIO OPERATOR ANNOUNCES SUCH A THING VITHOUT VERIFICATION? YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE CAMP IN A PANIC ABOUT A NUCLEAR ATTACK THAT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOV EXISTS!" he yells at him as he advances upon him. Some may call him a hothead, which is true sometimes, but in this case the correct tactic really is yelling. In fact, he means to so intimidate the man that he won't try to stop him from doing what he does next - which is to push him aside and take over.
"Attention everyone, the previous announcement vas a false alarm. To repeat: The previous announcement vas a false alarm - there is no incoming nuclear attack. I believe that ve vere the victims of a practical joke. All units stand down and return to normal operations," he says, his voice surprisingly calm after his outburst. This too is a tactic - if he sounds anything less than completely confident and completely calm then there are some who might not believe him. Having made that announcement, he turns back to the radio operator and says, "Nov, you vill return to your post and you vill do your job properly, or I vill see to it that you are relieved of it. Am I understood?"
Without really waiting for an answer, he leaves the communications area, his main focus at the moment being to make sure that the camp calms down. He can trust that his own men are likely to keep cooler heads, and it doesn't actually matter very much if a few people run off in a panic - as long as the camp as a whole gets back into order then everything should be fine.
And then he will track down Italy and they can have a little talk...

The unfortunate Italian radio operator's day turned from good to bad. He had been simply drinking an espresso when all of a sudden this random soldier with a weird hair curl ran to him and asked him to sound the alarm of a nuclear attack. Initially the operator was going to laugh it off, but the man with the curl... for some reason convinced him to sound the alarm.
After he had sounded the alarm a German soldier, who looked extremely angry unloaded a barrage of what seemed like pure rage: "AH! Sorry, some weird guy with a hair curl told me to alert the camp." Sighing the German took over and told everyone it was a trick... How did he know? The German told him to do his job properly and then he was gone...
Italy was amazed... His trick had worked like a charm, he had managed to get past most of the chaotic traffic and reach the jeep depot. That wasn't to say Italy didn't feel guilty of running. He was very guilty... But he just couldn't see people suffering on this attack. Yes, that was war, no different for nations. It was all the same. Newer ways to kill each other, new generals and a new generation... But it was all the same.
Italy was about to drive off when he realized what he was doing. Was he going to run off and leave his men? Was he going to leave Germany to deal with the situation? Was this his true worth to the United Allegiance? Was this his true worth to his own nation? Was this his true worth to himself? Just to run away like a man in a mid life crisis? As the camp settled down again, he realized what he had just planned to do. Italy jumped out of the jeep and ran crying to his quarters. What an embarrassment... What would Nonno Roma say? What would Germany say? It was siesta time as well! Oh, and his best friend would possibly be disappointed.
Reaching his own part of the camp, he entered his quarters. Oddly when you walked in you could be mistaken to think you had entered a home, seeing that he had been free for 7 months he decided to renovate his quarters a bit. It had a kitchen, shelves containing books of art, science and cooking recipes, a computer with a web cam mostly used to contact Romano, a bed with the Italian flag as the doona. A closet was present as well, one half with his military uniform and helmets (desert and blue uniform) the other was civilian clothes.
After taking his shoes off, he immediately crashed into his bed... It was siesta time after all.

With his primary goal being to calm down the camp, Germany deems the results of his announcement to be satisfactory. Yes, there are still pockets of unease, but for the most part everyone took his word for it and have begun to restore the camp to business as usual. So he first locates a couple of his best men, and he consults with them quickly - encouraging them to focus their attention on dealing with any little problems the false alarm has caused, and also encouraging them to go ahead with the review of the camp without him. He'd have liked to do it personally, but his men are capable and he's not strictly needed.
And that then frees him up to look for Italy. Suspecting that his friend would have gone for a jeep, he first checks the jeep depot for missing vehicles, only to find that they're all there. But after asking a few questions, he discovers that one had ended up being taken for only a short drive. So Italy hasn't left the camp entirely? That's more than he expected of him... A few more questions and he finds out where the jeep had been abandoned, and a few more questions after that and he's discovered that his friend's quarters are near where the jeep was.
When he reaches the location, he doesn't bother to knock - instead he walks right in. Glancing at the furnishings, he doesn't pay them very much attention - instead he spots Italy on the bed and simply says, "Italy, ve need to talk." He doesn't sound angry, but he does sound tired. Which is a much better mood than angry, but on the other hand his friend would know from experience that the German can go from tiredness to anger very easily if you say the wrong thing.

Italy was sulking on his bed about his actions. How could he do such a thing, it was shameful. In his efforts to try and stop an attack on the Joint Pact he had made a fool of himself and his nation, even worse was the fact that he made a fool out of himself for the entire United Allegiance to see. He was now thinking on whether he should apologize to Germany for the trouble... Yeah, that seemed like a good idea! Sitting up on his bed he was about to go when he saw Germany walk towards the quarters. (OCC: Listen to this to get the Italy experience of seeing Germany walk to the quarters!) Italy knew that there were going to be consequences, in fact he was debating whether he should jump through a window and run... Yep he should have ran. "Italy, ve need to talk.", Italy knew what that meant... In Germany's eyes he knew what he was really saying: Run and you vill be sober for a veek and lose your pasta and car license for a veek for good measure. Doing something to annoy Germany right now wasn't really in Italy's best interests right now... Better play it safe. "Oh... um... si, we will talk"

Germany seems deceptively calm as he sits on the edge of the bed. True, by now Italy knows the truth - Germany looks calm because he's forcing himself to be calm, and all he has to do to suddenly explode is to decide that he doesn't want to be calm any more. But for now he simply sits, not looking directly at Italy as he sighs heavily and comments, "Hov many years have I attempted to teach basic strategy to you, and the best you could come up vith vas a fake nuclear attack? It's very disappointing - perhaps I'm not a very good teacher." Or perhaps Italy is a very bad student, but still the German is sitting there looking disappointed in himself. A good teacher should be able to teach even a difficult student, after all.
Moving on from that thought, he adds, "Suppose that ve sit here and talk about vhy I think that moving this front is a good idea, and you can tell me all about vhy it's a bad idea. That vould probably be a lot more pleasant for both of us than the alternative." Which would involve him having to chase Italy down and literally dragging him into it, kicking and screaming. Something that he would have simply just done to get it over with in the past, but that was the old Germany before his defeat by the Allies in World War 2. The new Germany isn't so quick to go straight to the harshest methods to get what he wants just because it's probably the fastest - he'd rather talk people into doing what he wants instead of forcing them.
Not that he won't force Italy to move this front if he has to - it's for the greater good of the United Allegiance. But hopefully he doesn't have to.

In truth Italy never needed Germany's military tactics, he could general fine himself however the way he approached things was what got him in military trouble most of the time. But Germany saying that he wasn't a good teacher was... Completely correct! Maybe he should tell him that! Italy clearly wasn't thinking straight today.
"Ve~ Come now Germany! You're not a bad teacher, your an absolutely cruel, sick, strict and crappy overall one! In fact your the worse teacher I've ever had, you're strict and a always want me to listen! How can you expect anything to get done?"
When Germany asked for a talk on the whole front moving idea Italy felt like he won! Here was a chance to ditch attacking and relax like normal friends and be happy! This was great, fake nuclear attacks can work after all!
"Va bene! It is good that we can discuss this Germany!!! Well I have to become general Italy, wait here per favore!" Placing his Italian general hat on his head and discarding his field cap he turned towards the blond.
"First off, it would be a huge logistics challenge! I've seen on numerous TV shows that it is just worthless desert with little natural resources, even though our camp has enough resources for about two years in advance which includes ammunition, fuel, food and water.
Secondly, We are already achieving our objective of defending Israel.
Thirdly, who knows what lies beyond the desert.
Fourthly, It could be unpassable to tanks.
Fifthly, resupplying pasta, gelato and booze will be hampered.
Sixthly, walking through the desert is boring.
Seventhly, I would have to be sober while attacking, this could cause some issues.
Eighthly, there are no pretty ladies in the desert like here!
I think those are enough points to convince you that attacking is a bad idea! But if you want to attack I have a compromise... You can go and I can hold the fort, si?
There was absolutely no way Germany could address all those issues! Even though some were questionable to Italy himself. But Italy had also offered a compromise! Germany can attack himself if he wanted to make an offensive!!!

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
