{Zurich, Switzerland} Another meeting. Another peace meeting. And the number of participants of the meeting are decreasing. It looks like, some had accepted the fact that meetings like this does not have any much effect in the ongoing war. And some gave up the idea of fixing the problem through talks. These thoughts has been running through Basch mind as he entered the conference room. The meeting, this time, is being held on his place. They had decided to do so to avoid conflict when at the meeting, keeping in mind that the conference is being held in a neutral territory. Even Basch had agreed to this hoping that the countries would behave. Arguing, yes, is normal but they want to avoid fighting, violent fighting, while the meeting is going on, and currently... Basch place should do the trick. His eyes scanned the people that were currently in there. This made him sigh deeply. Their numbers were fewer than the last meeting. Most of the participants are the neutral ones, few are from either the Joint Pack and United Allegiance. He knew that this meeting won't reach anything. It was getting hopeless and the ones that are present are either here because they were bored or are hoping for a miracle to happen and find a solution to resolve the war, which is nearly impossible to happen. 'Maybe more will be coming,' he thought but he knew that this won't happen. He know that he shouldn't get his hopes up. He once again scanned the room and noticed someone that seemed new, or maybe he isn't. His eyes, had caught sight of a blonde that looks like America sitting alone in the corner. But he didn't seem like America because he was rather... quiet. A mumbled "Who might that be?" left his mouth as he began to approach the blonde man. He knew that he won't get an answer if he'll just stare at the man and try to remember who he was so he decided to just ask him. "I haven't seen you around before. You are?" Basch asked with a curious look.

Today had gone decently well, Matthew thought, though he was beginning to get tired of rehashing the same points again and again in meetings like this. For once, at least, Matthew felt like progress might be made, but as for how much, he wasn't certain. At least those arguing for peace had two proofs of concept to point at, as opposed to just one, now. No longer would they only be arguing about space stations, instead arguing about the accords between Japan and Vietnam with it.
He was glad to be headed home soon after this, though. Matthew had been in back-to-back meetings for something like the past month, punctuated with occasional visits to the field of battle. Not all of the meetings were peace meetings like this one, though- as one of the United Allegiance members with the largest proven reserves of oil, as one of the better-off economically countries more removed from the war than most, he had a lot of things he needed to do for his allies, as well, and it had been an... uh... eventful few months, to say the least.
He just had this one last thing to go to, then he'd be on a plane. He adjusted his suit. As he walked into the meeting room, though, a little bit of his optimism was drained. Seemed like he was one of the few ones here. Well, things might still go well, they could, and besides, Matthew had said he'd be here months ago. Multiple times, in fact, just in case. He sat down at his seat, pulling out his notes from his suitcase as Kuma yawned and climbed into his lap.
As he organized his papers and thoughts for the meeting, Basch walked over to him. He was hosting this meeting, so he'd probably start it (though that wasn't always the case- it just so happened that this particular set of peace talks had no certain leader). Matthew was just about to have hello- then Basch started talking. Matthew sighed. Well. Of course. He probably should have predicted this would happen, honestly, but given the amount Matthew had been in and out of the area recently...
"It's me, Matthew. That is to say Canada. That is to say one of the only members of the United Allegiance who ever shows up at these meetings consistently," he said. "It's nice to see you again, Basch."

Basch stared at the blonde as he saw him sighed. Did he said something he shouldn't have? There wasn't... right? Not that it matters, he just told the man the truth. But somehow, the blonde seem familiar and Basch had the feeling that he had met him somewhere and even know him, he just forgot who the man's identity was. "It's me, Matthew. That is to say Canada. That is to say one of the only members of the United Allegiance who ever shows up at these meetings consistently. It's nice to see you again, Basch.""Oh." was the only word that left Basch's mouth. If not for the blonde's introduction he would not have realized that it was Canada. 'So he had been on other meetings like this?' That made Basch wonder, he surely did not notice Matthew being in one of them. And he was sure of it but... a part of him also wasn't. Maybe, just maybe... Matthew did attend the meetings such as this and he may have noticed him but it was only for a while and then he'd forgot that the invisible country was there. That could be it. "I didn't notice you attending the other previous meetings, more like I forgot that you were there."It was a good thing to hear, for him, that a member of the United Allegiance still chooses to attend this 'won't reach anything to solve the ongoing war' meetings. At least there are still some who are willing to give their time and attend the conference, even how hopeless the situation is now. But he knew that there are also reasons on why they chose to attend the meetings. He has one, so why couldn't the other have there reasons too? He is pretty much bored at the moment and he isn't in the mood to start the meeting (because he knew that it would not reach anything) so maybe he can just strike a conversation with someone until the meeting's over. Without even asking, he took a seat next to him and asked his companion, "What is the reason you still attend these hopeless meetings?"

Matthew had been hoping just mentioning his name would be enough this time- he had ways he could force people into remembering him, but most of them weren't ways he'd rather be using at the moment. Alas, that did not seem to be what was happening. He saw the faint flash of recognition, but the syllables that left Basch's mouth were not something like "oh, yes, of course, silly me" or "I was just testing you, no need to worry", or anything much like that at all. Oh well. He won some, he lost some, and it wasn't as though he was terribly close to Basch, anyway.
He shrugged easily at Basch's response. "Believe it or not, I get this a lot," he said. "I'm sure I talked to you before, though, so perhaps today is just one of those days." Then he let it go. It didn't matter too much to Matthew at the moment- sometimes, he wished he could be more assertive, but most of the time when he tried, he found that it just made the situation worse. He was perfectly capable of doing it if he had to, but why force himself?
Outside, it was a little dark- the meeting had been late into the day, and now it was evening. Matthew had a hotel for the night, as he couldn't schedule a flight through the tightly regulated Swiss airspace until the next day. That was fine. He was going home after this- as in, actually home, to his own house, with nothing in particular planned during that period of time. No meetings, no fighting, nothing- unless he got a sudden visitor, he'd actually be about to have some time to himself, which was pretty great, honestly.
So, naturally, even as exhausted as he felt, he also felt more likely to give everyone the benefit of the doubt if asked to, and didn't mind chatting a bit afterwards. He was also feeling somewhat more friendly towards the meetings now that they were somewhat behind him. So he smiled. "I show up so that someone does, mostly," he started. "It's not just that, though- it's that I really do think that good things can come out of things like this- it's not completely hopeless. My niece is being resupplied, after all."
He shrugged. "If nothing else, I'm generally the one people are most likely to get along with, eh."

Basch noticed that someone took the floor and started talking. He glanced at the window only to see that it’s already dark. Sighing, he looked at the person speaking for a second before deciding to not pay attention to the meeting but instead to the blonde next to him. It’d be rude to just walk out of the room, especially that the meeting was held at his place. So he also decided to not do that and just have a chat with his companion. He nodded slightly, or sometimes just hum in agreement, at the blonde’s words to show that he is listening.
“I see. It’s good to know that there are still others that believe that these meetings aren’t completely hopeless,” Basch smiled slightly. “Unlike me.” He closed his eyes and let out another sigh. “It’s not that I want this war to continue. It’s just that it could not be easily solved through,” he opened his eyes to look at the ongoing meeting. “This.” He looked at the blonde to get him to understand what he is thinking. “That’s what I believe.”
“Who’s the niece you are talking about, by the way?” Truth be told, he had no idea who it is. It’s not that he really cares about others lives but it’s not like he doesn’t care about them either. He is actually concerned of them and is curious of them, he just don’t express it openly.
“I agree at what you said though,” Basch said. This may be one of the times that he becomes talkative. An unusual side of him, he knew that but he didn’t mind being one right now. “That you are someone people seem to get along with. You seem nice to be with.” He admits, he enjoys talking to Matthew. He won’t it out loud though. His thoughts began to wander on the well-being of the countries nowadays. He knew what has been going on but he does not really know how they are. “How’s your country doing?”

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
