It wasn’t often anyone would attend any one of the meetings no matter what the topic really was even though most were focused on hopes of peace for this war. Elizaveta herself rarely went as well because discussing when she could be out there fighting for the cause instead always really came off as so pointless. Though again and again she would also have to remind herself that with allies came the respectful task of at least speaking with them all once or twice. Sure Elizaveta knew who they all were in a generic sense of means, but otherwise she only actually had interacted with half the nations she allied herself with.
In fact it was on just these occasions Elizaveta had to remind herself she couldn’t always be in a mind set that was focused only on the battles she continuously caught herself up in. As much as she could respect whomever she came across it wasn’t as if she easily let them win if ever given that opportunity in the first place either way. It overall had her feeling quite out of place to be walking into such a friendly conference, but it had its upsides Elizaveta was sure to remind herself. Well honestly this meeting is overall very boring, but the faces around seem interesting, new, and nice.
Instead of focusing on the key points that were trying to be made at this ridiculous conference doomed only to end in a heap of arguments, she found herself bouncing from face to face seeing if she could at least put a name with each one. Some were very obvious, such as France or England, but there was one oddly quiet person she just couldn’t quite pin down. Too bad it clearly couldn’t be America even if he had a stunning resemblance because he was just much too quiet. So Elizaveta found herself curious and excited to finally see someone different was about the usual louder crowd.
The difficult part of it all was waiting for the whole entire gathering to end just to watch as most of the others got up and left. Honestly Elizaveta wasn’t a real patient type at all when she wanted to know something or get the job done. So when she saw the chance she lept up and hurried over to Canada with a bright, eager smile across her face as she spoke up before she was fully sure she had his attention. “Hey! I’ve never noticed you around here before, but I don’t attend many of these gatherings anyways. Are you new?” As bad as that could have sounded she still had a genuine smile and it was clear she actually meant every word unlike most others who wouldn’t have even bothered noticing to begin with.

Normally, Matthew was one of the few people who paid attention to meetings like this, you know. He was reasonable and level-headed, was friends with Ivan (well, besides the current war bit), and was forgettable enough he didn't constantly make people angry at him. On the other hand, he knew his limits, and even if he occasionally seemed like a doormat to people who didn't know him, he was anything but one. He was just polite about it. It made sense to have him at the occasional attempted peace talks- he would be reasonable , unlike some people. Normally, that is. Today, at a supposed 'peace talk' that contained only members of the United Allegiance and neutral nations, Matthew was finding his mind drifting. This was, as expected, turning utterly pointless. There were people present busy trying to convince the neutral nations to join the United Allegiance, and all talks of peace were halfhearted at best. There weren't even any members of the opposing side present. Nothing was going to get done. Once or twice, Matthew tried to interject, maybe suggest that they actually invite at least one member of the Joint Pact if they actually wanted to talk peace, since you know, the Joint Pact would also need to agree to whatever the plan was, but he was talked over and didn't feel like shouting and/or making Kumajiro roar at the crowd. Instead, Matthew had spent much of the meeting sneaking glances at the Canadiens game. It was the Canadiens-Bruins game, one he always tried to be present at because it was, in his opinion, the greatest rivalry in sports, and also because he needed to be there to scream at the refs- if he didn't, who else would? The two teams were very close in skill this year, which made the rivalry even better. He had to actively keep himself from shouting several times during the meeting (not that they would have noticed), and he totally swore in Quebec French a little louder than he should have a few times at some of the closer shots (no one noticed this, so he figured he was safe). He should be there. He really wanted to be there as opposed to this stupid meeting, but for some reason it had been deemed important, and here Matthew was, trying not to make too much noise as the Canadiens won 4-2 in Boston. Oh, Alfred was going to be so pissed, this was great! The meeting ended a few minutes, and Matthew mourned the stupid length of the meeting- if only it had been just an hour shorter, he would have been able to catch the second half in his hotel room, at least... After sending several gloating text messages to his brother, with the information that this meeting had been completely useless somewhere buried within, Matthew decided to see if he could find somewhere to get a drink, partially in celebration of the game, partially to drown out some of the more stupid attempts to entice the neutral nations to the Allegiance he'd still managed to hear despite himself. Seriously, if they wanted a swift end to the war, pretending these were actually peace talks to get people to show up was not the correct tactic. As a result, in an ironic twist of fate, Matthew almost did not notice Elizaveta approach him. However, he looked up in time to see her coming over, a large smile on her face. This was unusual- Elizaveta wasn't normally one of the people who could recognize his presence on an average day. Then again, he had been watching hockey, albeit quietly... People normally noticed him more in a sports context, if only because he cursed very loudly a lot and, if playing, was the single most likely person to get red carded or otherwise kicked out for egregious illegal contact. He smiled back at Elizaveta. "I'm Canada," he said, "Matthew Williams." He paused. "I've been at nearly all of these, eh..."For those who don't know: the Canadiens-Bruins rivalry is, in fact, one of the "greatest rivalries in sports" and has caused riots before. They've played each other more often than any other two NHL teams. They're the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins, too, so I can only imagine Matthew egging Alfred on and vice-versa during these games. Alas, Matthew was not in Boston in order to do so this time.

When she did attend these meetings, Elizaveta could say she tried to at the very least pay attention and keep a positive attitude towards them. Though that was when there was both the United Allegiance and the Joint Pact attending a supposed peace conference. Even if she had absolutely no problem being a participating part of or supporting the war front that did not mean she supported what this meeting being held was all about. The tactics of persuasion being used on the neutral countries were honestly rather ridiculous and almost repulsive to Elizaveta especially if anyone here wanted to stay on good terms with these countries. It was anything but polite or respectful and it reminded her of how rough it was to stay out of the war originally.
The pressure any, if not all, of the nations in a neutral position must feel was high and it made Elizaveta wonder just how many meetings of this particular sort the United Allegiance had while others just like herself were caught up in other forms of business for the war. Wasn’t there enough pressure as is with some nations being quite close to the Joint Pact yet being in the United Allegiance and being a perfect target for Russia, or even how each individual nation’s economy or population took hits as the conflict only continued on longer.
Maybe this was the reason that Elizaveta had taken notice of Matthew as the meeting continued to drag on endlessly. Only the few who were distracted possibly could actually get how pointless this was even if she didn’t always exactly agree with peace. She still knew what a terrible idea temptation was of all strategies to get another to take their side and it must have been for that reason the usually unnoticed stood out to her as clear as day. Besides she came here to speak with nations she hardly knew and Canada was the perfect opportunity! Not that Elizaveta even knew much about the opposite side of the globe to begin with. Though if Matthew really could be as diverse from her as Kiku was from Alfred there always was the slight chance they would still get along just fine.
Honestly she had to make some slight notes to herself when approaching Matthew knowing that as nice as she can be on average, it still did her nothing when she knew very little about what the nations across the Atlantic were like in general. Well.. that America was always quite loud and obnoxious when entering a room, but Elizaveta knew better than to jump to conclusions for comparisons after knowing Prussia of all the annoyingly arrogant countries. So she still had quite high hopes that Matthew would be respectable as some of her close friends were.
Of course it was sometimes almost odd to have to be the one to remind herself that this was no place to act as she usually did when given the chance. No, now she was most certainly wearing a dress and should at least act slightly more lady like when introducing herself. While Elizaveta couldn’t make any guarantees she definitely tried. This was still sometimes an adjustment she was getting used to on her own account as well though most didn’t mind too much. It was aspects such as these though that helped keep her smiling and only pushed her curiosity farther as she listened intently to Matthew. “It’s very nice to meet you Matthew, I don’t really get around as much as I should for Hungary’s sake. I’m Elizaveta Héderváry and this is only one of a few meetings I have been to.” She shook her head with a slight change of pace as if disappointed for a moment before smiling back up at him once more. “Seriously, I can’t say this meeting is going anywhere.”

Matthew was nearly one hundred percent certain that he'd met Hungary before at some point, not that he begrudged her this fact as he listened to her speak. Who knows- perhaps she'd remember him longer this time! Besides, it wasn't as Elizaveta was someone he talked to all that regularly, so he'd give her a pass. He mostly only got irritated when Arthur or Francis was in a "let's forget Matthew" mood- they were practically his parents, they should probably have this figured out.
That didn't mean Matthew wouldn't respond with a slightly passive-aggressive "It's nice to meet you again, Elizaveta." His expression and voice was nearly completely polite, and he didn't actually mean for his words to be in any way biting this time, he just wasn't going to let this completely slide without a word. It wasn't like she'd care in a few days, anyway, and he was still in a slightly more aggressive mood after watching the Canadiens game during the meeting. He hadn't gotten to properly tell the ref to shove it after that yellow card, too. That would have been nice.
"Well, the war effort takes a lot of time from all of us," he said, "I just tend to schedule showing up at meetings like this when I can. There's more than one way to end a war." That, and he had a niece who would probably jump right out of space again if no one attended meetings like this, an overworked sibling who could really use the break a successful meeting would bring about, and a nation of people who didn't want to be at war much longer. Really, it made sense to attend meetings like this, even if it was disheartening every time absolutely nothing happened.
Still, did it have to be during such a big hockey game?
Elizabeta, at least, also seemed upset that the meeting hadn't gotten much of anywhere. Matthew just shrugged. "Most of them at least represent some kind of step forward- but yes, they do have a tendency to go nowhere." He could have really spent his time better than he'd spent it at this meeting- but then again, he was a bit more jaded when it came to these at this point than some of the people here. While in his mind, it was a ruse to get neutral countries into the war effort, he supposed for some Nations here, it probably came across as more of an honest conversation, didn't it? He didn't normally like reading ulterior motives into things, but at this point he guessed it was inevitable.
He smiled ruefully. "This one wasn't much of a peace meeting at all, to be honest. At least during some, I get the chance to talk to people that I'm normally barred from talking to anymore, and get a better idea of their point of view." These people tended to mostly be Ivan, somewhat Toris (who noticed him surprisingly well compared to a lot of people), and occasionally Iryna. He did talk to other people on the other side as well, but, well...

In as casual and relaxed of a situation as this, it was honestly strange to find that she had such a chance to give another country a glance over instead just to get an idea of who she was formally talking to. Of course Elizaveta would never admit out loud in a place such as this that typical in the past it was to strategize for whomever she was battling against during war. Truthfully very few have had conversations with her like Matthew was now on a more regular basis and been able to somehow avoid her bad side.
So far though she suspected absolutely no reason that this discussion would turn into an ugly one. Though that one word 'again' did throw her slightly for a loop before she decided to just think nothing much of it instead and let her pleasant demeanor continue on. It would be much simpler to remind herself that saving agitation for the battlefield is the best place to take out all her internal fury that anyone causes her, even at this ridiculous meetings.
Then again hearing Matthew's opinion's gradually were starting to get her.. excited was one way of putting it. Elizaveta certainly could go overboard when she thoroughly agreed and decided to dedicate or commit herself to something. Any talk about the war, even idiotically named meetings that are actually used as persuasion tactics, were an excellent chance. She would crush all the Joint Pact who stepped in her way. That's her mind getting way out of proportion though, honestly not very lady like at all. "The longer this war lasts and the harder it will be for the smaller nations to recover," Her face turned to a slight scowl for a moment before she smiled brightly up at Matthew letting a temporary thought slide,"As much as I'd enjoy pounding a few of the Joint Pact into the dirt, peace would do a lot of other nations and my own better."
It was once the last few phrases trailed on and Elizaveta listened as consistently as she could, she slowly lost a bit of her patience with this whole idea of what was supposedly a meeting as well. Granted, she wasn't upset with Matthew in the least. It was basically everyone else at that gathering she watched and new were using pointless forms of persuasion tactics to just try and lure the neutral countries to their side. How undignified, but honestly predictable from such nations by now.
"This meeting was an absolute mess and nothing got done because certain nations think cheating neutral nations onto their side will do them any good." She clenched a fist slightly before taking a slow breath to calm herself down. "It's more work for you or myself, but I guess they are just strategizing the way they know how." Elizaveta had spent her time among warring sides and even more peaceful sides, she still understood those fighting more but she couldn't say she didn't have an opinion for both.

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
