The day had started fairly normally. Matthew was catching up on some paperwork that he hadn't touched in some time. To be fair, it was hardly his fault that he'd been shuffling between the warfront with Al, various meetings and a few failed peace conferences, and playing with his bear- did he say playing with his bear? No, wait, he meant very important, very serious business. Yes. That sounded like an appropriate excuse for the pile of untouched paperwork on his desk. With a sigh, he started checking over things, signing them, and looking for an excuse to go back to doing just about anything else. He had no such excuse. If he didn't finish these things without an absolutely foolproof, ridiculous emergency of an excuse, his boss was going to just about have his head.
He sighed as Kuma scratched at his leg, trying to climb up into his lap. "Careful," Matthew admonished, picking up the bear as he did. Kumajiro was probably a little big to be holding in his lap while trying to do anything involving paperwork, but Matthew figured it was better than having the polar bear whine at him about it- which, despite being just as old as Matthew was, if not older, Kumajiro was almost certain to do. In excess. Matthew sighed and started to try to write around Kuma instead. He'd gotten quite good at this over time, but the bear was still probably slowing him down somewhat (especially since Matthew was busy patting him with one hand).
Matthew was finally beginning to think he might be making some headway into the pile of stuff on his desk when his phone started ringing. He looked at the caller I.D. It was a military number, a base in the northern parts of Ontario. He grabbed the phone. This was about when his day went from just 'normal' to 'started normal'. "Hello, this is Matthew Williams," he said.
"Sir?" the man over the line said. He sounded slightly confused.
"Canada," Matthew said.
"Yes, of course," the man said. "I knew that." There was a long, somewhat uncomfortable pause. Matthew sighed internally. This sort of thing got old rather quickly, though he'd gotten used to it after about the first hundred times. The good news was that, with his own people, the whole forgetting-entirely-about-him thing didn't tend to happen in person. That didn't seem to extend properly to over the phone, though. Maybe it was because they couldn't see him? He really wasn't certain... "We have a... situation," the man finally began again, his voice still sounding a little embarrassed.
"A situation?" Matthew asked, curious.
"An 'Anastasia Jones' showed up here and is asking to see you, claims to be your niece," the man began, and Matthew didn't really hear anything about that. Anastasia Jones? As in, his niece? She'd said that much, too, and how the hell had she gotten here? Dimly, he could hear the man continuing to speak. Matthew was just busy trying to figure out how Anna had turned up in Northern Ontario. None of the reasons he could think of were very good. He was trying not to hyperventilate. Had she hurt herself? Had she even ever been out of the space station before? He didn't think she had! Kuma made an irritated noise as Matthew's hand, which had previously been petting him, curled into a tight ball, holding Kumajiro's fur.
"What's the earliest clear time for a flight to land?" he asked finally, a high degree of urgency. "Because I'll be getting one of those. Immediately."
"We can clear a place if it's that urgent," the man over the phone said, "but she's only maybe eleven, she doesn't seem like much of a threat-"
"She's supposed to be in space," Matthew almost shouted. This did not make the man over the phone seem any less confused.
"Sir?" he asked.
"I'll be getting a plane now," Matthew said. "This qualifies as an emergency." The still vaguely baffled man confirmed this with Matthew. They hung up. No more than forty minutes later, Matthew Williams was on a plane with a somewhat disgruntled Kumajiro and a somewhat startled pilot, going to where Anna was. He did not bring his paperwork. This, he decided, was as a ridiculous emergency, and his boss could just wait a few more days for that paperwork.
By the time Matthew's plane landed (a very short amount of time later, in fact) on a military base in Northern Ontario, he had calmed down slightly. Okay. So his niece had somehow gotten out of space, despite a general lack of shuttle programs at the moment. She'd also chosen to show up in the middle of nowhere for some reason. She'd somehow pulled something that seemed rather impossible, which, once Matthew thought about it, was so ridiculously like both of her fathers that he was almost surprised he'd been so surprised. Knowing his brother and his niece, it had probably been at least half thought-through but ridiculously dangerous and/or reckless. This was also a given, since she'd somehow ended up in Northern Ontario out of space.
He stepped out, carrying his bear. Matthew had nearly left Kumajiro behind in his haste, actually, but he'd snuck into Matthew's car and he wasn't about to just leave Kuma at the airport. That would have been a disaster, since Matthew doubted airport security would take a bear trying to sneak onto a plane terribly well. If Kuma had decided today was a good day to be absolutely determined to follow Matthew around, Matthew was not going to stop him. He didn't have time for that, since, despite having calmed down some, the fact that his niece was somehow no longer in space still seemed rather urgent.
He was quickly met by the man who had called him on the phone and lead through the rather small base. There weren't many people here, and the likelihood of much needing the base here was small. It was often used as a refueling point for surveillance jets or jets carrying researchers headed further North, and that was about it, most days. It only needed to be big enough for planes to land. Matthew had never been so happy to know it was here- the next closest airport was probably still a good hour, hour-and-a-half drive on a good day, and today was not a good day. The plane had nearly been delayed in landing due to a snowstorm that was about to hit. If he hadn't landed here, hadn't been so prompt in getting a plane, Matthew might not have landed at all, instead circling around to another, safer airport, or otherwise, been stuck driving the entire distance in the snow.
Did Anna even know what snow was? Matthew thought she might, intellectually, but wouldn't that have been something odd to wake up to. Let alone gravity- if Matthew thought his brother's short lived attempt to see if Matthew could stand going to space was rough, with simulated anti-gravity and g-forces (it had not gone well and Matthew had learned that he, unlike his brother, was rather determined not to end up one of the nine Canadians to be in space), he couldn't imagine what it would be like to suddenly end up with gravity.
He might have theoretically calmed down, but he was still freaking out just a little bit. He needed to see his niece okay before he stopped freaking out.
Finally, a door was opened, and there, sitting like nothing had happened, was a young girl with white hair, his brother's blue eyes, and a very familiar face. "Anna!" Matthew said, forgetting he was holding Kumajiro for a moment, instead dropping him and running up to grab her in a tight hug. (The bear made a startled noise before staring intently at Anna. She smelled like kin but also wasn't normal and he wasn't sure how to react yet.) "Are you okay? How did you get here?"

Gravity is weird. Yes, she knew that she'd be dealing with it before she came here. In fact, she knows much, much more about it from a scientific standpoint than a girl the age she appears to be has any right knowing, but it's one thing to know about something like gravity and another thing to experience it. She's experienced it before, whenever the station has needed to increase its orbit, but that was only for minutes. So far she's been experiencing gravity for days. How many days is not something she can really remember - it was all a bit hazy in the beginning. Painful, too - she'd been worried that dying would hurt, but that ended up not being so bad. It was not dying that proved to be more painful.
She's aware that she was found in the middle of some forest by a couple of locals. She'd still been asleep, but had healed enough that they recognized her as a young girl - she'd woken up briefly, but her body had been all too quick to encourage her to go back to sleep so they didn't have any idea who she was. So they'd taken her to the nearest town, right to the local authorities. Who were quick to determine that she wasn't a missing person or anyone else they could identify. It wasn't until she was healed enough to wake fully that she found out that she was in Canada, so she was able to tell them who to contact. Of course she knew better than to tell them that she needed to talk to Canada - instead she simply said that she was the niece of Matthew Williams, who works for the national government. After seeing many photos of men named Matthew Williams who happen to work for the national government and more than one person asking if she's sure that's his name and that's where he works, they finally found him for her.
Of course, in the process of figuring out how to get in contact with this man that nobody in a small town police department has heard of and yet is of high enough importance that it's not so easy to just talk to him, someone who does know who her uncle is found out about it, and that's when she got moved to the military base. She's not sure whether that's to keep her safe or to keep people safe from her, but either way they've been really nice to her while she's waited for them to tell her uncle that she's here and for him to fly here.
She's sitting in a chair - which is a new and interesting experience for her all on it's own. Furniture in general is something she doesn't have in space - there's no need for anything to sit or lay upon, and while there's a definite need for places to put things using a table or any such thing simply doesn't work. But she's sitting when her uncle arrives. She's invited him to the station repeatedly, but though he's sent astronauts and even really big presents like arms. Which aren't as cool as a module or something, but are nevertheless extremely useful. But that means that they've never met in person, though she can recognize him instantly from all the photos of him she's seen.
"Uncle Matt!" she exclaims happily when she sees him, and she attempts to meet him halfway to the hug but, thanks to gravity and her unfamiliarity with it, she only has enough time to stand before he reaches her. It's a tricky thing, standing - it requires a good sense of balance. Anna has a good sense of balance, but she's not accustomed to using it at all. The fact that she can get to her feet while she's distracted without toppling over is in some respects amazing. Then again, though it may take a baby a year or more to learn to walk they spend most of that time not attempting to walk but waiting until they're old enough and developing the required muscles. For Anna this is more a matter of learning to use her limbs in a different matter than she's accustomed to in order to cope with forces she's not used to dealing with - so it's a lot like learning to swim. Though it would probably be a lot easier for her to learn how to swim than to walk at this point - she's way more accustomed to floating than your average person.
"I'm okay now," she answers honestly with a suddenly serious tone, squeezing him back very tightly, "I burned up on reentry, but I think I'm better now! 'Cause that's the only way I could get down - I had to jump."

It typically took quite a bit to shake up Matthew, so it was a sign of how much he genuinely cared for his niece that he had panicked quite as he had. For some reason, his family members (cough Alfred) had this uncanny ability to make him worry more than just about anyone else. Perhaps that was why he was so hard to worry otherwise? It took quite the level head to deal with this kind of thing on a semi-regular basis. Mind you, not normally quite this level of insane, though sometimes it did come quite close.
Matthew notices Anna wobbling slightly as she stands up, though he doesn't quite register it until he's already swept her up into a hug. It wasn't a surprise that she was a bit wobbly, and it somewhat cemented the situation in his mind. He was dealing with his niece's first time someplace that was not space, ie, on earth, and for once Matthew was going to fully admit that Alfred was probably somewhat more qualified. While Matthew knew plenty about space at this point (impossible to avoid, really), he wasn't the expert. Then again, maybe this was a different matter altogether. Less space knowledge, more medical? Maybe both?
At any rate, what Anna had done was incredibly dangerous, and Matthew was about to scold her. He didn't quite get that far, because Anna started talking and it sounded so familiar that he laughed instead. Oh, yes. "I got horrible, devastating injuries, but don't worry, I'm completely fine now!" "Sorry," he said, "I had a moment- you're just very much my brother's daughter." (For now, he was going to ignore the fact that he had completely willingly joined in and helped plan at least half of these incidents, if not more, and was definitely at least nearly as bad about admitting he'd been hurt as Alfred, especially if he'd already considered it dealt with.)
He unwrapped himself from the hug and held Anna at arm's length, not letting go quite yet- he still wanted to inspect her to make sure she wasn't too horribly injured himself. He quickly gave her a visual scan. There was nothing too glaring, thankfully, though Matthew planned on giving it a further check later. He'd take her word for it for now. "I'm just glad you aren't too hurt," he said, nodding. Seeing her fairly okay was enough to make him stop freaking out quite as much. Her reaction had helped, too.
That being said- he might have been stopped from giving her a panicked lecture, but it did not save her from a somewhat more calm-toned, reasonable one. "That being said, do you know how dangerous this was? You're pretty well to the North. Not much more and you'd be in the ocean, and I'll hazard a guess that you can't swim, given that you've had absolutely no way to learn. My country also has more freshwater lakes than any other and a sparse population this North that would make it unlikely anyone would find you for quite some time. This could have been an absolute disaster." His expression wasn't entirely disapproving. What was done was done, after all, and it was hardly as though he could change her mind after the fact. "I'm sure you have a good reason," or at least a reason that seemed really good in her head, "but I worried when I got that phone call."
He paused, then shrugged. "That's probably enough for now. I'll leave your Dad to do the rest of the lecturing- speaking of which, do you want me to call him now or later? Because he'll be here very quickly the moment I do, and probably have a lot more to say than I did." That this would happen, Matthew had no doubt. "There's a snowstorm coming in, though, so if we wait a few minutes I'll be able to buy us extra time to figure out how to approach him. Can't land a plane in a snowstorm and it's looking bad enough that he shouldn't be driving through it from a different airport." Yes, Matthew had finished lecturing and was now offering to help his niece try to get out of too much more of it. He was the uncle, not the parent! He was perfectly supposed to spoil her.
"Now, we've never properly met in person, have we? Mostly my fault- Alfred tried to convince me to visit you but even thinking about it makes me feel sick," he said. "Still, I swear you've gotten bigger since I last saw you!" he said brightly. However, inside, Matthew got a sinking feeling, realizing just how long it had been since he'd last seen her. He hadn't had time to try to do any kind of video call, lately, and even though he normally got endless information about her from Alfred after any talks or visits, that front had been unusually silent.
Well. He'd certainly have time to catch up now, wouldn't he? Especially considered the grinding halt a lot of space research had come to lately- getting her back into space would prove far more difficult than just jumping.

The immediate laugh and words of her uncle cause Anna to beam. "Thanks!" she replies instantly. She'll definitely take being compared to her daddy as a compliment! She's not unaware that she did something incredibly bold and dangerous. But she'd literally had to, so she'd done it. And she'd actually consider it to be more of her papa's side that encouraged her to do what had to be done to survive, no matter how extreme. The fact that it's also all thrilling adventure to her is where her daddy's side comes in more.
But why shouldn't this be a thrilling adventure for her? Burning up on reentry is exactly as much fun as it sounds, and so was waking up while she was still in the process of healing - she'd been in a lot of pain. But right now she's gotten to the fun part - now she's on Earth for the very first time, and that's definitely an adventure! She's literally seen more since she got here than she has in her entire life: this is the first time she's seen an actual tree in person, for instance. And what mountains look like from the ground. And she's already seen more people than she's ever seen in the entire rest of her life. Of course she's seen pictures before, but that's not the same thing - this is an experience. And then there's the whole gravity thing. Oh, and wind - that's new. Weather too.
And meeting her Uncle Matthew! Even if she knows full well that he's going to give her what is to be the first of likely several lectures because of what she's done. Well, that's fine - she has a lecture to hand right back, though it's a little one compared to what she's prepared for her daddy and papa. And the one her uncle is giving her doesn't do very much. "Yep! It was really, really dangerous!" she agrees, "But it's kind of hard to aim when you're jumping out of space at five miles a second - I was trying to land in the United States, but I overshot. But that's why I jumped when I did - it was a good angle. If I undershot I would land in Mexico, if I overshot I would land here. Maybe I could have landed in a lake, but the important thing is that I didn't land in the ocean!" See? She clearly has her priorities straight!
Though when he talks about calling her daddy, she's suddenly quiet and her expression grows suddenly very sober. There's a certain intensity about her even though her voice is quite soft as she comments, "I have a lot to say to him too." Though when she realizes that her uncle is offering to give her the reprieve of some time before that meeting, her expression softens again.
Though the smile that is threatening to break out again suddenly goes back into hiding when he comments on how she's grown. "Oh, yeah..." she says, allowing a long pause before she admits, "I don't like it..."

Matthew had somewhat expected his words to go in one ear and out the other, but that didn't mean they weren't important. The goal was to prevent his niece from doing these things without at least thinking them through somewhat, and perhaps considering factors like her own health and safety into them. Never do ridiculous, reckless things at all? Have you seen her family (Matthew included himself into this)? That didn't mean that she hadn't nearly given him a heart attack with the sheer scale of this particular endeavor.
Matthew still sighed at her explanation, though, because even if he'd expected in one ear and out the other, that didn't mean he had to like it. "Hm. Yes. Clearly, this was well thought through," he said dryly. At least she acknowledged it was dangerous, albeit in an overly cheerful and enthusiastic way. That wasn't that much of an advantage, but at least it was something. He stayed quiet after that, though, since he fully expected that Alfred, even if given a bit of time to cool down, would likely give Anna quite the lecture, as well as possibly try to wrap her in bubblewrap and hide her someplace. The only reason Matthew assumed the latter bit was because part of him had a strong urge to do the same thing. Somehow, he doubted the girl would appreciate it.
The moment Matthew mentions Alfred again, though, Anna's face goes darker, and Matthew realizes that he's probably not the only one who hasn't... oh. That would explain it. Guilt sank into his heart. Anna wasn't Matthew's kid. Funding for a lot of things that shouldn't have been cut were cut at the begin of the war before everyone remembered the importance of science in warfare, and even then, the research being funded was mostly related to things that could give the United Allegiance, or at the very least, Canada an advantage. Matthew didn't think this was a good thing, but he hadn't done much about it.
He just... hadn't considered the collateral damage. He'd realized earlier that he hadn't seen Anna in a while. He'd just assumed that his space nut of a brother would have fought tooth and nail, and hadn't heard anything otherwise, and just sort of assumed... Judging by Anna's expression, he'd assumed differently than he should have. He couldn't really think of something to say about that, though. It was his fault too, after all. Instead, his own expression, which had suddenly fallen a bit more serious again, stayed that way for a moment. "I'm sure you do," he finally just said. "Just say the word, and I'll call him. I won't until you say, though." Least he could do was stall as long as she needed it, right?
For a moment, too, after he'd said something about offering to stall Alfred, she'd looked like she was going to grin. Then she stopped when he commented about her growing. Matthew internally sighed. He'd liked hearing things about how much he'd grown, but then again, he'd had a twin brother who one day stepped away and grown far more than he had any right to, leaving Matthew behind. It had taken some time to catch up again after that, and Alfred was still taller. Anna didn't have anyone to compete with, and was also fairly young in the grand scheme of things.
"Any reason why?" he asked, searching his head for the reason. "You can keep on acting like a kid after getting bigger, after all. Trust me on this one. I have proof." Mostly. Matthew hoped Anna didn't grow too quickly, but for the moment, he wasn't worried. Nations had long childhoods, and tended to grow sporadically, as far as Matthew could tell. He wasn't an expert, though. He'd have to ask Francis or something- he tended to know a lot about this stuff. Ever since he was a kid, really, Francis had always seemed the expert.

If Anna knew that her uncle was still thinking so negatively about what she's done, she'd be quite bothered by that. In spite of how exciting this adventure is for her, doesn't he realize that she did it because she was desperate? Though based on his expression when she's so serious about her upcoming conversation with her daddy, perhaps he's beginning to.
On a certain level, she kind of understands why she ended up being abandoned. When the war broke out, everyone was so busy and they needed their money for other things, and space is very expensive. But she hopes that everyone just assumed that someone else would take care of her instead of actually deciding it was okay to give up the space station completely in favor of the war. That's one of the things that she needs to talk to both of her fathers about - did they really mean for it to happen? She considers both of them to be far more responsible for her existence than her aunts and uncles, so she won't fault her uncle Matthew for it - he's not able to care for her all by himself, after all, so she wouldn't have expected him to have kept trying after everyone else stopped anyways. Daddy and papa could at least have made sure that someone was keeping her up in the sky.
But that's a conversation to be had with another person. For now she'd rather not think about it too much and bask in the excitement of this adventure. Which is why she's quick to state, "Well, I don't want him to have to try to get here through a storm, so we can wait a bit." Besides, it gives her a chance to spend more time with her uncle Matthew! At the moment that sounds way more fun than having to confront her daddy, which is definitely something that she needs to do and soon, but not so soon that it would hurt anything to put it off just a little bit. She's actually pretty nervous about the prospect - it's not something she would do unless she absolutely had to - so she could use some time to mentally prepare for it. Especially after all of this excitement of simply being on Earth.
When her uncle questions why she's not happy about being bigger, the anxiety she feels about being reminded about it and the amusement she gets from thinking about big nations acting like kids evens out into a small smile. Though when she starts answering his question, it all comes out as a ramble of worries. "Well, I'm growing really fast, and I don't know why, and even if I can still act like a kid, I'm not ready to not be a kid! Cause adults take care of themselves, and I can't do that. I mean, I don't even have any people - I can't have any people because we haven't figured out how to make it so people can visit me for really long times yet. We were working on that, but then everyone stopped because of the war. So I definitely shouldn't be growing right now," she explains.
As she speaks, she doesn't really notice it but she's started to get a bit less steady on her feet. That's not really a problem because her uncle is somewhat holding on to her, but he'd definitely be able to feel her weight shifting in his hands. Even though she doesn't have very much weight - in fact, she's incredibly light for her size, and she isn't that big of a person - but she's also extremely firm to the touch. She feels as firm as some sort of a muscular weightlifter, even though she clearly isn't. Instead she's thin and lanky - not a muscle in sight.

He still felt a bit terrible. Matthew knew better than to dwell on it for the moment, but he felt rather terrible for his niece and was now determined to find something particularly nice to do for her. He'd make pancakes- did this military base have everything he needed for that? Maybe- it wasn't a terribly well-staffed base at the moment, given that it was mostly a watch point for the arctic and functioned as a search-and-rescue operation more often than a military one, even given the war. The northern parts of Canada were not terribly contested lands, after all, until you got far enough north to hit the Arctic and the oil that might be there. That was where things got fuzzy.
"Alright, then," he said, wondering how long it would take for Alfred to figure out that Anna was here on his own. Waiting to call Alfred would certainly delay him for a moment, but there was always the small chance he'd realized something was going on before Matthew did, despite Anna landing in Matthew's country- NORAD was likely the only other organization that would have picked up something as small as Anna falling to earth in his airspace (and Matthew felt a little strange and worried once more just thinking something like that), and it was under joint American-Canadian command, not simply Canadian. Then again, given the length of time it had taken for anyone to tell Matthew about it- nah, it probably wasn't worth worrying about for now.
Anna starts rambling out her worries to the answer to his question, and Matthew, who is already somewhat holding Anna, makes sure to put a steadying hand on her shoulder. She's horribly light, and Matthew is left wondering if that's normal for the space station or if its their fault, given what's happened. He doesn't say anything. It doesn't feel like the right time. "Breathe," he suggests, smiling slightly at the ramble, but still concerned for her sake- if she was worried, he supposed he had reason to be, as well.
"Well, I guess I can understand that, eh," he says, starting slowly. "I mostly had troubles once when your father grew and I, well, didn't properly- freaked me out badly for a little bit," he admitted. "I guess the answer is that you're gaining some independence for yourself?" He shrugged. "I admit, I never understood some of this stuff myself. You'd think it would be something we found the answers for, but I suppose it's just one of life's great mysteries." He idly noted that Kuma was bumping up against his leg, still just staring at Anna. He'd figure that one out in a minute.
Outside, snow was beginning to fall. As the first few snowflakes fell past the window, Matthew realized something. "You've never been in the snow before, have you?" he asked, already knowing the answer, a grin crossing his face. "If you'd like, we can head out there some before the storm gets too bad."

Anna doesn't need to wonder about whether or not her daddy knows where she is - she knows. And unless he suddenly took NASA out of mothballs and tried to call her up, he wouldn't know at all. Yes, there are systems in place that might have detected her fall, but they're not sensitive enough to tell the difference between her and a meteor the same size as her. And something her size falling out of space and burning up on the atmosphere is a normal, everyday occurrence and completely not noteworthy. If it had been the space station itself, that would have been another matter.
When reminded to breathe, she finds herself immediately taking a deep breath. And then she giggles, partly because she hadn't realized that she'd needed a breath until he said so, and partly because he'd thought to tell her and it had worked. Okay, so perhaps she's getting a bit worked up about the situation. But it's still a real problem! "Well, I don't want to be independent! Not yet - I'm pretty sure it's impossible I have my own people. Maybe when I do I'll be ready, but that's not for a long time," she says with a frown.
There are a lot of interesting experiments that can be done in space. But the vast majority of the research conducted relates to if not directly supports the goal of allowing humans to remain in space for longer. It's a very hard goal, actually - while people can clearly survive in such low gravity for periods of time, it takes its toll. In fact, there's a reason why most of the people who have ever visited Anna are what could be described as 'middle-age' or order. Yes, the fact that becoming an astronaut is an extremely competitive field to work in and it simply takes a few decades of life to get the resume that you need to rise to the top is a factor, but younger people no matter how brilliant get passed over for the opportunity simply because they have so much life left to live. Even if nothing explodes and kills them outright, the physical toll of being in space is so great that they may be shaving years off of their lives - whether or not they are is something that is being studied. Or at least it was until the war. People simply aren't designed to live in microgravity, and figuring out how to make it so that they can do so anyway is a huge undertaking.
One that Anna does not feel should be set aside for a war - not even a global one. It's not simply that she's pretty sure that if the space station falls then she'll probably go with it - though she would, of course, prefer to continue to live. Even more importantly, though, she feels that it is the destiny of mankind to travel the universe, and that destiny transcends everything that anyone fight over. But they can't do that until they do all the research and figure everything out, and if she's not there to help that will be a huge setback for the whole thing.
When her uncle mentions the snow, Anna glances over at the window. But unlike what he suspects, she has been in the snow before. She shivers reflexively at the question, "Yeah, I woke up in the snow..." And it really hadn't been a pleasant experience! Because for one thing, she hadn't been dressed properly for the snow, and for another she wasn't fully healed yet so she'd still been in a lot of pain. So it definitely hadn't been a good first impression, even if it wasn't the actual fault of the substance.

It was almost odd, hearing Anna say that she had no desire to be independent. As much as it was a relief for Matthew- and it was, in fact, a relief for Matthew to hear that she didn't want to try to be independent now, given that, logistically, it would likely be a disaster, Matthew also knew that, at her age, he'd still been convinced he could take on the world. He couldn't and he didn't, but he also wouldn't have had the common sense to actually point that out. He probably would have insisted he'd be fine, before stumbling back home in time to admit that no, whatever hair-brained scheme he'd had to be pulled out of by a polar bear was not even remotely a good idea.
He was known as theoretically the more level-headed sibling now, but once upon a time he'd been a stupid kid, too. It didn't help that, whenever he saw his brother, they'd had a tendency to just compound each other's stupid kid to the highest possible degree. He supposed it just surprised Matthew that Anna didn't have quite the same level of stupid kid, especially given that she'd recently jumped out of space. With a decent reason, he supposed, but it took a certain kind of childish daring to do something like that, a certain inability to understand your own mortality- or, well, that might just be Matthew's dislike of planes, flying, and the even imagined concept of going to space talking. He wasn't quite certain.
"That's awfully mature of you," he said, smiling slightly. "given that when I was your age I regularly had to be pulled out of the dumb stunts I tried to pull, mostly in the name of 'taking care of myself' and 'it seemed like a good idea at the time', eh." He considered for a moment. "But at any rate, I don't think you have to worry for now about being too independent. I'm not feeling any urges to let you be independent right now. Actually, right now I sort of want to go yell at Parliament, the Canadian Space Agency, and possibly both of your parents, with the specific goal of not leaving you by yourself."
That was a good way to describe exactly how he was feeling right now: now that he'd figured out exactly why he was feeling guilty, he was now rather determined to do something about it, whether anyone other than Anna noticed or not. He'd left a pile of paperwork on his desk when he'd flown here, and he was probably going to leave it a bit longer, this time for a cause: a different sort of paperwork, a network of phone calls (even if they would be long and frustrating upon occasion)... he could definitely do something, even if he personally would not be helping to escort Anna back up to space and did not currently have the equipment to do so.
He ruffled Anna's hair. He'd love to go outside and build snowmen with her. Or something- it wouldn't take more than half an hour for the two of them to basically be stranded inside the building, given the way the weather was beginning to look, and he was pretty certain that would be boring for Anna. Sure, she would have never been on a military base like this before, but then again, the base was basically an airstrip with a basic building next to it, a hangar that held maybe three planes, and basic monitoring equipment. It wasn't exactly the most exciting of places. No one was exactly itching to invade Northern Canada at the moment, especially where it didn't really have much oil, if only because there was nothing here. Most everyone lived a bit further south. Plus, with Alfred likely to treat an attack on Canada as an attack on himself, Matthew felt fairly secure that no one was going to directly try it quite yet.
Except when he asks the question, she shivers, and responds simply, and Matthew winced. Like he'd said, he'd once been a young, fairly reckless child, who should have known far better than to run out into snowstorms to find people who weren't actually coming back, especially when his watcher at the time wasn't always very good at actually finding him... He winced. "...I'm sorry," he says, and he suddenly realizes that he's only now actually apologizing to her, seriously, for any part of the chain of events that had brought her here. It's a vaguely uncomfortable feeling. "It can wait," he finished, "though if you ever want someone to show you how to build a snowman, I've gotten pretty good at it. I have a lot of snow."

It's not that Anna isn't reckless at times and doesn't think that she can take on the world, but with concepts like safety and logistics are woven so tightly into her creation and very being, it can be said that she's very much on the practical side. She looks before she leaps, though she may not consider whether or not the entire leap itself is ill-advised - only whether or not she thinks that she can make it. That normally means that when she gets herself into trouble she needs to be lectured rather than rescued, like right now for instance. Though she's pretty sure this time that the fact that she had no other choice is actually true this time - she's sure that she tried everything else. Perhaps someone older could thing of a different way, but she'd not wanted to jump out of space, even if it's an exciting adventure - the danger level of the venture was a bit too high, but the danger level of not jumping was getting pretty high too.
She smiles a little, looking a bit relieved about how much her uncle wants to keep her from being left alone again - she hadn't liked that part, especially! The station has been too empty for too long! Though she's quick to comment, "Oh, you shouldn't yell at my parents - they might get mad at you. They won't get mad at me." Well, probably not anyway - not for telling them that they shouldn't have left her alone. They might get mad at her for jumping, and she fears that she'll get the 'you're too expensive' talk, but she's not afraid that they'll get offended. "Maybe it would be helpful if you yelled at the ESA, though," she adds, because that's one conversation she probably won't have time to have herself. The European Space Agency just plain has too many people in it for her to talk to them all personally - not with how hard it would be to track down where they are and how their schedule would work with the limited amount of time she has left.
Still, the main people she needs to talk to are her fathers - if she can get at least one of them on board, then she ought to be able to secure her future, though both would be better. If neither of them are willing to turn their full attention and resources away from the war, though, then all her aunts and uncles combined might not be enough. Not during wartime, or at least that's what she can figure. It's hard to calculate costs when she has a limited understanding of what money is, but she can kind of guess at these things based upon what others have told her about things in the past.
Not really reacting much to the apology, she continues to look out the window as he repeats his offer for a later time if she doesn't want to do it now - even though she's not sure when she'd have the opportunity if she doesn't do it now. Her daddy will likely come scoop her up at the earliest opportunity, and then she needs to talk to papa, and then she really needs get back home. Shivering again, she comments, "The snow is cold and it hurts - I don't know why it looks like so much fun in the movies." That's where she gains a lot of her understanding of the world, actually. Yes, she understands that movies and such are usually faked and have a lot of things in them that aren't completely true, but she hasn't gotten to see or experience a lot of things in them. It's that and things like Wikipedia that have taught her the most, but Wikipedia doesn't have very many videos and sometimes not even pictures.

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
