Guideline to Being a Nation
Many Hetalia RPG websites have their unspoken rules and head canons in regards to what it means to be a nation. In the following post, I hope to create unify laws of nature regarding nation personifications and their relationship to their people and other nations on Do Not Forget Me. While some of it may not yet be able to be explained by science, it does not stop it from existing. Gravity still holds us to the Earth. Times goes forward. Rain will fall from the sky. Even when people did not know the reasons for such activities occurring, they knew that they did and accepted them as fact. Similarly, all nations know of these unify laws of nature, either from personal experiences or being taught by an older nation, and accept them as the way of life.
Nations are connected to their people, land, and culture.
All the upcoming guidelines stem from that simple phrase. If it’s the only thing you take from this long post, that’s fine by me, for it’s the most important.
Lifespan
As long as the nation’s people, land, and culture continue to exist, a nation’s personification will exist. A nation does not need all three to survive, though it is highly recommended because without all three, it can lead to instability in the personification.
Death
Due to their long lifespan, it can sometimes appear a nation is immortal, but a nation can die if they lose their connection to all three, people, land, and culture. It is not entirely certain what can cause a nation to lose the connection, but is usually (not always) occurs in the dissolution of a nation. In the wake of death, a new nation is usually created. Example, from the Roman Empire’s death brought North & South Italy. Nations still do not fully understand the concept of death, but they know it can occur, though some claim, it is merely Mother Nature reclaiming her child.
Appearance Age
Nations age differently than humans, and usually plateau in their age appearance in their mid-late twenties. A few factors effect a nation’s age. The numbers of years a nation has been in existence, the growth or amount of their economy, and their population size. Each factor either helps a nation age or keeps them from aging. For example, America has a strong ever growing economy and a large population size, but because he is only a couple hundred years old (young for nation) he still only appears nineteen.
Strength
Nations can be seen with inhuman strength matching the power of Superman. It varies between nations, and while a nation might be physically strong one decade, it can easily change the next. The strength of the nation is dependent on two factors, military strength and economic strength. During the height of the Cold War, America and the Soviet Union were equally matched in strength, and if they were to have an arm wrestling match, it would likely go on forever. However, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia was left in economic collapse. If America and Russia were than to have that same arm wrestling match, not only would America win, but he would break Russia’s hand through the table and leave a huge blow into the floor.
Sickness
Nations are not immune from becoming sick. If they are in poor economic health, facing a recession or depression, depending on how terrible the situation is, they could either be stuck with a common cold or fully bed ridden. For example, Greece’s debt crisis will leave him with a high fever and cold. The only way for a nation to heal is to stabilize their economy. Another factor to sicknesses is the influence of a nation’s people. If the majority of people are suffering from an addiction, the nation personification can be effected by such addiction. Example, China suffered an opium addiction during the Opium Wars with Great Britain due to his own people suffering the same addiction.
Auras
An aura surrounds all nations, it’s one of the reasons some believe nations are spirits themselves. It’s rarely something seen with physical eyes, but rather felt. Nations have a keen sense to recognizing an invading aura. It serves as a warning mechanism to a nation that another might be near him and to be careful, whether an intruding nation is actually a threat is something not known by the aura itself. Auras can be affected by a nation’s strength or emotions. If they are a strong nation, there aura can become suffocating as if their air became thicker. If they are extremely angry, an aura can actually become physically visible. For example, when Russia becomes filled with pure dark rage, a dark aura tends to surround his entire form.
Another important note on auras is that nations are not the only ones who can sense their presence. Human do not understand or know what they are, but when a human interacts or is in the vicinity of a nation, they can sense that nation’s aura. It can either warn the human to leave or make the human feel warm and happy. A citizen of that nation is even more affected by their nation’s aura in particular. For example, an English woman walks into a pub to meet some friends. She can’t seem to find them at first, but feels an inclination to sit at the bar. She does so and sits next to a man she does not know. The man seems familiar to her, like a long lost friend. She does not know it, but the man sitting next to her in the personification of England. Another example, a private in the German military is on the field. Gun fire is happening all around him. His Captain is killed. A man comes towards him and orders him to move. The man isn’t currently wearing badges or stars as a sign of military leadership, but something tells him that he is leadership. In his gut he knows he would follow this man to death. The man guiding him happens to be the personification of Germany.
Attacks to Personification vs. Attacks to People
As mentioned earlier, a nation can only die if it loses its connection to their people, culture, and land. They might appear human, but they are given life by the nation not their body. A nation’s body might be stabbed, shot, broken, dismembered, or blown apart, but the body will always heal because the nation is still alive. It will still hurt. It is painful to have an arm ripped out of your socket, but it is temporary. The time it takes to heal a body is dependent on the health and strength of a nation.
An attack to the nation, their people, is a true attack that can cause real harm to the nation’s personification. A nation is complete with their people and can sense each one of them within their being, so when suddenly a portion of them die, it’s as if a piece has been ripped from their form. Large attacks on a nation’s people are more painful than any attack on nation’s body. They are so powerful that often they appear on a nation’s body physically and turn to scars. It takes time for a nation to heal from such attacks and leaves them weaker. For example, Russia’s scars on his neck from the Mongolian Empire and China’s scar on his back from the Japanese Invasion of World War II.
Unique Abilities
Some nations have unique abilities based on their people’s culture and history. Culture has always had an impact on nation’s hobbies, personalities, and interests. Germany has a weakness for beer, Russia performs ballet, America is addicted to video games, but there are some nations granted unique abilities based on their culture. For example, England’s people have a history in magic, and such history has granted England the ability to perform spells and other dark magic.
Unique Spirits
Whether nations are spirits born from Mother Earth or something else entirely is still debated, but there are spirits that have attached themselves to particular nations. There is little explanation of what caused such an attachment, but once a spirit attaches itself to a nation, it is nearly impossible to separate it. For example, Prussia’s Gilbird and Russia’s General Winter.
I am certain I will add more as we continue, but as of now, these are the guidelines to being a nation. Phew. If there are any questions about the nature of nations, feel free to ask them in the following thread. I will answer and add to the guidelines.
Thanks Everyone!
