Hearing him describe his own brother that way brings an amused look to Vietnam's face. She knows about as much about the rest of the Nordics as she knows about Denmark, but she can certainly understand describing a brother that way. But she can see that he's not very interested in discussing siblings, so she politely lets the subject drop.
But as he goes off on the Middle East, her expression becomes more serious - sympathetically annoyed, even. Because she feels the same way about the whole thing - minus the bit about Russia, of course, but she has her own frustrations with it. Though she's not one to literally whine about anything, so instead she simply states, "I'd be perfectly happy to let them sort this out themselves myself. If Australia and half the Pacific didn't decide to team up and go after China, I wouldn't have been caught in the middle and would have no reason to be involved." Which is more irritating the more that she thinks about it - a simple world map could show you that none of those countries should have much of a reason to care.
She opens her mouth to say something about Russia's push west when Denmark decides to punch the wall for some reason. After a moment of being surprised by that, she figures that it's probably a sign that he used to be stronger at some point and forgot that he wasn't in a moment of anger - these things happen to countries. Nevertheless, once she's over her surprise, she covers her mouth with her free hand. Why is quickly apparent, because she's not able to completely suppress a laugh. But it's the little, guilty sort of laugh one makes when one knows that one shouldn't laugh, but just finds it too humorous to stop oneself. Fortunately, it doesn't take her very long to suppress the laugh completely.
When he responds so gently to her little rant about the situation with her brother, she smiles slightly. And she seems unbothered by his last statement. "You are trying to convince me that the nation who has been kindest to me is a 'dick'," she points out, hoping that he'll understand her position better if she puts it that way, but then she adds, "I am willing to believe that if he is, then most nations are, but not him only." Because, as she's seemingly unsuccessfully tried to point out, lots of nations are just as guilty. It's definitely not fair to demonize Russia, at least not in her eyes, even though a lot of nations seem to like to do it.

Mathias’ lips pursed into a pout when she accused Australia of aggression. Australia was a pretty chill fellow, not his favorite dude on the planet, but if you ever wanted to go on a crazy adventure like river rafting or jumping out of a plane, the man would hop at the opportunity. Mathias considered himself a dare-devil in his own ways, but it did not compare to the younger nation. He was pretty certain the nation had killed himself on accident a few times with all the crazy things he did. But while the nation might have insane habits, he knew for certain Australia did not conquer. He defended. Australia was actually not taking much actions in the Pacific. He knew America was planning something with him, but as of now, Australia was one of the main forces in the Middle East, so her explanation for her involvement sounded like propaganda nonsense. He wondered who had told her such lies. Russia. Russia or China.
He opened his mouth to protest. Words almost slipped out. Oh…look at how cute she is when she laughs! He inwardly noted the adorableness of her entire person. Her polite way of hiding it, and how soft and friendly the laugh sounded. It seemed different from the ruthless woman he had met just moments before. Aw, so adorable.
Eh, he didn’t like Australia that much anyways.
Her constant defense of Russia tumbled his mood back down. He did not understand the people who found that frozen heartless man’s company enjoyable or kind. “I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but if he was nice to you, he probably saw you as a pawn,” he remarked, his fingers stretching back and forth getting used to the pain. He finally shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. Hopefully my shining personality can at least convince you all Europeans aren’t terrible,” he winked at her.

The trouble with a war like this is that it's often difficult to fully pinpoint who is being aggressive and who is being defensive. If one nation - fearing another - gathers their army, which then causes their enemy to believe that they're about to be attacked, prompting them to take preemptive action to protect themselves from this threat, which is then taken as provocation for an all-out war, who is really the aggressor and who is the defender? Likely both nations would cast themselves as the victim.
And Vietnam has seen enough war to know that pretty much all of them are like that. Who went after who first? Does it even matter? Either way she still believes that she was provoked into war and is simply defending herself - if everyone else is going to cast themselves as the victim, why can't she? Especially since she is just defending herself. Well, herself and her brother's southern shores.
Oh, she may be accused of conquering, but really she just brought Cambodia back into her house - which is simply restoring things to how they should be, so it hardly counts as conquering - and then there's the islands she's positioned her forces on. But that's purely to keep everyone else away from them - what is she supposed to do, wait until they're on her doorstep? As far as she's concerned, her enemies are not welcome to set one foot on her land - and that means engaging them before they get close. She can't do that without a number of very strategic islands under her control. It's not like she's gone after Australia and tried to conquer him yet - she doesn't even have the forces for that yet!
His remark about how Russia sees her causes her eyebrow to raise just a little. "Should I be offended that you think this is news to me?" she asks him rhetorically, her expression becoming quite calm as she states, "As long as he acts as my friend, I will act as his friend - if he does not, I will not." Though her tone is quite light, there's just a small hint of that same dark note that had more fully shown itself when she'd spoken of her victory over America at the end.
But that hint of darkness disappears instantly when he winks, as it causes her to laugh again - this time more openly because she's not as afraid that it will offend Is she adorable or is she ruthless? She is both. Though she'd assume that he'd be more bothered if he knew exactly how much of her laugh was at him instead of with him - though it would be a lie to say that it was entirely that. As much as her history has given her reason to dislike Europeans, she does have to admit that all of them have a certain exotic charm to her eyes. And unlike in the past where she felt that she was practically helpless against their foreign ways and devices, she's now able to see them more as equals instead of some fearful superpower.
And this man in particular has the bonus of not being on her list of nations she has a specific grievance with, and his cockiness is adorable. So perhaps he is convincing her that all Europeans aren't terrible - or at least he's making a good start of it so far. "Perhaps I can convince you that all communists aren't ma quỉ - evil things," she responds with a smile when her amusement dies down enough to allow her to speak.

Mathias laughed at her rhetorical question. Good point. He knew he thought she was smart, though he always wonders with those who associate with Russia. He never really saw a point to put up with that creepy dude. For the same reason he doesn’t like watching horror flicks, he doesn’t like being around people who naturally make him shutter in disgust. Then again, he wasn’t on that side of the world with China and Russia close by. Yuck.
He gave her a hundred dollar grin when she laughed more openly. She might have been laughing at him, but hey, it wasn’t the first time that occurred. Mathias had gotten used to being laughed at by his four younger brothers and others. He learned not to take it to heart because everyone who laughed at him knew he could still kick their asses if he wanted to. Viking blood doesn’t disappear. He smirked at her last comment and found himself stepping close to her. Hey, he could be flirt. He had charm, good looks, strength, money (sometimes), and talent. He knew how to whisk a girl off onto a romantic journey that left them breathless by the time the evening ended. Mortal or nation. He could woe like a pro bachelor. Surprisingly, not even location stopped his awesomeness. Hot, sandy, dessert with gunfire, call it five star restaurant for him.
He was taller than her. He wasn’t as tall as Sweden, but he had quite a large stature himself, so he leaned down slightly bringing him to the same eye level as his. “I don’t have anything against communism,” at least not anymore, he started, “People call me a socialist. I’m a mix match of everything.” He chuckled, “Call me your stray mutt.”
He did not touch her, he merely let his body linger in her personal space for a bit longer then needed. “I would ask you out for dinner, but the rations around here aren’t anything special,” he laughed softly before pulling back.

Just because Vietnam counts Russia as her best friend doesn't mean that she considers him to be a good friend. No, he's simply the least terrible - most of the nations that she's had any significant relationship with before has been simply awful to her lately in one way or another, while he's actually been quite nice to her. But that doesn't mean that she's blind to the way that he treats others or imagines that she's somehow special and doesn't need to worry that he'll do the same to her someday.
After all, in the grand scheme of things their relationship hasn't lasted for very long - while they're both quite old nations and have known of each other for quite some time thanks to China, they really hadn't had much to do with each other until the Vietnam War. Before that she'd been taken over by France, and before that had been another era - when the fact that Russia's house was all the way on the other side of China's lands was considered to be a considerable distance. So it could simply be that Russia hasn't gotten around to doing anything extremely unpleasant to her yet - possibly because he doesn't seem to actually care about her very much. And while it's really irritating when your best friend doesn't really care about you, that's also quite refreshing when compared to all the nations who decide to not only pay attention to but strongly disapprove of everything you do.
When he steps forward, she holds her ground - not appearing to be even the least bit intimidated by his size and closeness. In fact, she looks at him directly in the eyes in a bold manner reminiscent of someone looking at someone the same size if not smaller than herself. She smiles at his words, still looking amused though any actual laughter is being contained. "Socialist?" she asks, her smile becoming teasing as she comments, "Well... that's a start." She makes no attempt to touch him either, but because that includes not hitting him with her oar again, that can only mean that she doesn't object to this invasion of her personal space.
In fact, when he comments on the quality of the rations, she says, "Ours aren't anything special either, but is the company not more important than the meal?"

Mathias liked her smile. He liked it a lot. For a woman who looked like she took life a little too seriously, it brought him joy to know that he bring out such a pretty expression. He chuckled a bit light heartedly at the remark. As far as he was concern, the era of judging a nation based on their government system had long passed. Hind sight was always twenty-twenty, but when he looks back to the period where he hated communist nations, it had very little to do with the system itself, but rather the fact that such system reflected an unspoken alliance with the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviets, the system itself hardly seemed to matter.
He smirked at her question, “It looks like I’m winning you over. I knew I would wear you down eventually.” He chuckled and finally glanced around them. Gun fire still erupted around them. By the end of the night, one side would have this town. “But if I brought you back with me, they would want you as a prisoner of war,” he stated seriously with a soft sad smile, “You’re too pretty to be behind bars.”
He then leaned forward again, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered, “We should met up elsewhere, more neutral area.” He took her hand in his own, pulling out a pen with his free hand and quickly jolted down his phone number and name in her palm. He then pulled back with a smirk, “For now, I got to go win this battle.”

"Who is wearing who down?" Vietnam asks him, her voice and expression teasing. Though when he glances around, it encourages her to do the same and remember that they're still in the middle of a battle. Not a battle that she's that invested in, but it's still a battle and she's not normally one to try too hard to avoid them. She may not feel like this fight is that important to her interests, but it's still enough to get her blood flowing.
Though his comment on the idea of her being behind bars causes her to frown and say, "It would not be the first time." Nor likely to be the last, for that matter - she has far more passion when it comes to war than actual success, and though she's now more powerful than she's ever been and success seems far more likely, she's not about to assume that she'll never wind up in that situation again. She's just more likely to be able to escape quickly, is all.
But she can't help but feel warm at the tickle of his words in her ear, and the look that she gives him as he writes on her hand is certainly intrigued enough - she'll probably call the number. Though he's quite right that there's a battle to be fought first. But it's the way that he indicates that they should get back to the battle that causes her to act as she does next - he's much too cocky and confident, isn't he? Shifting her oar to let it lean against the building once more, she suddenly takes a step back, and as she does so she slides the rifle back off of her shoulder with the smooth ease of someone who is very familiar with the weapon. In an instant it's pointed right at his head.
"Ten seconds," she says, a certain fierceness in her expression indicating that yes, in spite of their preceding conversation she is going to shoot him if he doesn't take advantage of the time she's giving him. All's fair in love and war, right? Besides, if she didn't like him, she wouldn't give him any time at all, and if she does shoot him it's not like he won't get better. And if he faults a dragon for being both fierce and competitive, then he shouldn't be asking one out on a date.

He smirked at her tease, and gave her a wink. It would take a lot more than a pretty face to wear down Mathias. His ego had amassed over the centuries, and while he could be pretty laid back, he certainly was set in his ways and ideas. His brothers could attest to that fact any day of the week. If Mathias wanted waffles for breakfast, but everyone else wanted pancakes, you’re for fucking certain that they will be eating waffles. It also didn’t help that he spent so much time with Gilbert.
He tried not to fall back into the tense reality of their situation at her next statement. All countries had passed. He had fought his share of wars, and seen the threat of oppression. He remembered being occupied by the Nazi Germany and being forced to fight something he did not believe in. Gilbert had been a real ass during those days, but his brother, Ludwig had been ten times worse. The amount of times he had to bite his tongue had left a taste of blood in his mouth for the entire war. History was rough, rough for everyone. Current times were rough. Call him a jokester and an idiot, but at least he knew not to weigh himself down with the past. Those who constantly looked behind them, never saw what was right in front of them.
The gun shifts to his face, and it becomes very clear that his statement before had been taken extremely seriously. By get back to the battle, he meant kill a bunch of randoms in the field, not her. He lets out a half laugh by the situation and her warning. “I usually last longer than ten seconds,” he smirked, totally disregarding her warning as he grabbed the barrel of the gun. He roughly pushed it downward, closing the distance quickly to plant a kiss on her lips. He didn’t let it last long, not wanting to get hit by an oar again. “See ya, angel,” he smirked and then bolted off down the maze of allies to avoid getting shot.
Yay, she would call. Who wouldn’t call him? He was totally awesome.

She can't help but laugh at his wink. Mostly because she's far less 'worn down' than his ego probably assumes that she is. He's charming, she'll give him that, but it's not like he's the first charming European she's ever met - and given how badly that went in the past her eyes are wide open. She just doesn't see any reason for concern - at least not yet. But she's watching very carefully.
And it's difficult for Vietnam to even decide if she's already assuming that what she's watching for will appear or not - she has a very long history of those she thought that she could trust becoming invaders, after all. In fact, perhaps the only reason why she can trust anyone at all is because she believes that she's prepared to handle it now - it's not that she believes that they're any less likely to try to hurt her, it's that she's confident that she'd manage to give them what they deserve if they do. Well, perhaps not personally in some cases, but she suspects that she could get someone else to do it.
In any event, she's quite surprised when he once again dismisses the gun pointed at him (seriously, does the man want to get shot?!?), but that doesn't compare with his audacity of choosing that moment to kiss her. Something that she's so surprised by that her only reaction is a somewhat stunned expression - did he really just do that?
Still, she recovers remarkably quickly, and has the gun raised to fire just before he disappears around a corner. But... she doesn't fire. A part of her tells her that she should have - that was more than ten seconds, and she did say... Then again, maybe that only felt like more than ten seconds? And with her earlier complaint about the rudeness of him being so familiar with her ringing in her ears, she also feels an impulse to attempt to hunt him down. But when she doesn't immediately follow it she realizes that she... just doesn't feel like it.
Instead she lowers her gun again and makes a scoffing sound to herself. If she does end up spending more time with him, she strongly suspects that at some point he'll push her too far and he'll be suffering the consequences. But not today. She shifts her rifle back to her shoulder, collects her oar, and starts heading the opposite direction in order to search for another good sniper position. One of the most important features of a good sniper position is that nobody knows where you are, after all, and now he knows where she is. And while she can't be sure whether or not he'll use that information to his advantage, she certainly would, so she's quicker to assume that he would too and that she'll need a new location. Which isn't a big deal because she's an expert at such fighting and it's not that difficult for her to find a good spot. Besides, she's feeling much more motivated about the battle than she was before - as much as she actually kind of likes that cocky attitude, what she likes even more is the idea of possibly showing him that she can hand his ass to him.

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
