A hand on his cheek and Kiku leans into it. He could so easily leaned forward and steal of Ludwig’s lips again, but he doesn’t. Instead he turns and presses kisses to his palm. How their languages can be so different and be translated so differently into English and yet the intimacy of German “I love you” and Japanese “I really really like you” are the same. Deeply affectionate and nothing more than right in that moment. Lust has fallen away for the moment and been replaced by this.
Love. Affection. Loyalty.
Japan chuckles and lifts his head to shake at Ludwig. “Mmm, now who’s ruining the moment? You mentioned the war this time.” His mood is not broken either. Perhaps it helps that Germany’s mood does not drop either, but more so it is just how Japan is. This is reality. They are in a war and both of them are fighting. He is not Italy and reacts with disappointment at facts. Of course his visit was to be short, Japan already knew that. There is no use getting angry at what was already clear and what cannot be changed. So he settles back against Ludwig.
“Our paths will cross again, for whatever reason. I have you for now, though, and that is enough. You are always enough and yet maddeningly not,” he said and laid his head to listen to his heartbeat. “I will cherish what you can give me before you must leave.”

Blinking in surprise as Kiku points out that he's touched upon the very topic he'd scolded him for earlier, Ludwig blinks in surprise. "Es tut mir leid!" he apologizes, though he gets the sense that his choice of conversation topic wasn't as bad of a choice this time.
Just as their words seem to carry more meaning now, it's also easier to think about the war without getting as upset about it. War is the reality of the world right now, and though they can distract themselves from that fact all they want they'll have to face it sooner or later. But how much easier is it to face when he's so very relaxed? With his emotions so thoroughly satisfied that they're refusing to be riled up by the thought of all the horror that war brings, all that's left to consider the war are those more logical parts of his mind - that part that sees strategies and tactics, but not as much the pain.
Hearing Kiku's words, he gives a quiet grunt of amusement and says, "Ve have gotten so very spoiled - remember vhen the only vay for us to visit each other vas by boat?" And they weren't very fast boats, either. Of course, the visits were also longer - it wouldn't have been deemed worth it to go all the way to Japan for a visit, only for a brief stay.
"But there is more I can give you than this. Vhat else I can do for you vhile I'm here?" he asks, referring to things besides the activity they just completed. As much as he'd love for the answer to be no and to be able to say that he needs nothing else from Japan, and therefore spend the rest of this visit in the same way that it began, unfortunately he knows that he won't get that answer. They are both very large, very important countries caught in a world war, after all.

A soft, melodious chuckle is all Germany receives for his apology. It is fine, it’s always fine. The topic is very welcome now especially with the boneless feeling that encompasses Kiku at the moment. Ludwig did a good job in letting him work on all the stress and put it towards something that brought him indescribable pleasure.
Kiku had needed that distraction. Now as he listens to the steady pump of Ludwig’s heart his body is aware and so is his mind. He could finally push open the door and not feel pain when he thinks of who opposes him, China amongst them. It is not that it does not hurt or that he does feel disappointment, but he can work past that. How could he have ever thought that he’d get support from him with Russia pulling his strings and seducing Yao into bed. That is all those nations know, manipulation. They do not know affection as he and Ludwig do. There is no trick being played between them when they lay together, but there is a desperate want of reconnection and reminder of their long histories together.
Japan smiles as he is made to remember how first saw each other—how this all begin. Those boats and the smell of salt. “I do. Remember when that stormy day you went to leave my harbors and I pulled you into one of the docking houses? That was the first time I kissed you. We could spend longer with each other then. But I am not angry now.” There was no point to be. If he had to, he could make the trip to Germany just as he had done for him.
How Kiku wished he could tell Germany that there was nothing more he needed, but for now the war must come back to light and he is not disappointed in that. He’s been given the respite he’d needed for so long. “May I send some of my generals to your country for a time? For now the war I fight is upon my shores, but soon enough I am sure I will be brought into the whole scheme.” It was unavoidable after all; the only question was when it would happen. Little did he know the answer was soon.
“I would like them to experience the European front so that I may confidently aid you when that day comes. I will not let your people fall under the rule of the Pact.”

When one lives for so long, it's very easy to become forgetful about things - at times Ludwig is certain that he's forgotten whole decades. But then there are the memories that are still crystal clear, never mind the centuries since. "Ja, of course - it vas the first time I kissed you back," he replies with an amused curve of his lips. It had, and it hadn't, been quite a surprise, he recalls - he'd felt a certain bond forming with Kiku, but he'd thought that the odds were very high that he'd just been imagining it until he'd been led into that docking house and had it confirmed. He recalls being quite enthusiastic about it, once the initial surprise wore off.
Forcing his thoughts away from that particularly fond memory, he focuses upon Japan's request. And he's very quick to agree. "Ja, I vill see to their instruction myself, and be sure that they get some hands on experience," he promises. Given how the other nation has conducted the war thus far, he can only imagine how much in need of such experience they are. Of course they've been fighting a defensive war, but there's a fine line between that and going on the offense - especially in a land war if they're used to combat on the sea instead. And though they'd have done battle drills, that's hardly the same thing as a real fight. Fortunately, Germany is quite experienced in war, so he's a good teacher - as is Japan, but Japan can't give them a real battlefield to experience or a first-hand explanation of the finer points of their current strategy in Europe.
"And I vill not let yours fall either," he promises Kiku, shifting his hand again to cup the other nation's cheek. He's not sure to what lengths that they'll have to go to keep these promises when they're both so nearly on the opposite side of the world from each other, but he knows that they'll both do their best.

They are speaking of a war that is very much booming around them. Even now Russia could be preparing another flock of his metal cranes that will come to assault his very lands and people. People were probably dying, lands flattening little by little beneath the tread of boots, tanks, and other artillery. There is war and Kiku knows he will soon have to join it as more than defensive player. His friends are out there risking themselves and their citizens and he will soon be unable to just sit idly by and allow them. It is not just their battle. His peace ended with the whistles of a Russian airstrike.
Yet still he can lean into Ludwig’s hand and nod. He knew that Germany would try his best and Japan would do the same. Oceans and land separated them and Japan was in a position that was dangerous, but he trusted Germany and his other allies. He knew he always could.
So he leaned in and kissed Germany once more. Because he could, because he wanted to, and because what else was there to say to his promise? There didn’t need to be anything said. He’d send his generals with him when he left. This part of the conversation was at least over on Kiku’s part.

As Kiku leans in, Ludwig's hand slides backward, curling around behind Kiku's neck, where it gently suggests allowing their lips to linger in each other's embrace for a moment. It's not a kiss of passion, but one of love and concern - the war is indeed out there and while he trusts his own and Kiku's skill at warfare, nothing is ever certain. And while they personally are unlikely to face death, neither can help but have the greatest of concern for the fate of their respective peoples. And what concerns Kiku so easily becomes a concern of Ludwig, so there is plenty of concern in the nation.
When their lips finally part, he lets his fingers wander into Japan's hair as he comments, "If you have been thinking ahead about perhaps becoming more involved in the var, have you perhaps had any ideas for nev technologies that vould help us in Europe?" He's come up with a number of useful inventions himself as the war has progressed, though he knows that his friend's mind works quite differently than his own - it seems like every time Japan invents something it's always something different than what he would have come up with himself. Of course, that seems to work the other way around too.

Linger. Kiku wants to linger. He wants to stay right here, forget the war for ever longer. What Japan wants is to force Germany to join him. He wants to slow down and spend minutes and hours mapping out the contours of Ludwig’s mouth and body as if they do have all the time in the world. Then he wants Ludwig again, this time with him being the one beneath the German nation. Yet there’s a war he cannot ignore. So he just fills his kiss with as much love and concern as he can. He is spoiled now because he no longer has to wait months for Germany to arrive, but at the same time he misses those times. Ludwig would have stayed longer then.
But he is worried for Ludwig and his people. He is at the front of the warfront.
Japan does not open his eyes immediately when they part. He enjoys the slide of Germany’s fingers for several moments before he lets out a breath. “Mhm…Hai, I do,” his brown eyes open. “Ammunition, hand grenades…I can show you. Just promise me one thing. No grenades for Italy.”

It's true that Germany is in a difficult position in the war - his territory lies right in the way of the best course for a land invasion of the rest of Europe, and the Russians have spent most of the war only a country away. Of course, much of the reason why the progress over land has halted there is because the Germans are defending Poland as if it was their own soil - they know very well that if Poland falls they will be next. Not that the German army is alone in that attitude - all of the countries beyond know that if Poland falls then the Russians are one step closer to them. Keeping the Joint Pact at bay is a true group effort.
Though it's true that some nations are a bit more... effective than others. The man that Japan is lounging on top of right now is the one who knows how to create and wield the German War Machine, for example. And then there's Italy... And the mere mention of Italy and a grenade in the same sentence causes him to sigh so heavily that Japan would sink a few inches. "Italy..." he says, his voice one of resigned exasperation - though there's a hint of a certain fondness there as well, "Ja, no grenades for him. Hmm, but I vould like to see vhat you've come up vith. And vhen you're ready to start producing heavy artillery for your army, you should ask me for my thoughts." It figures that Japan would have been giving more thought to small, personal weapons while his own ideas have been about things on a much larger scale. But both are useful to consider - bigger weapons can cause heavier damage, but the small weapons an individual soldier can carry are more precise and easier to put exactly where they're needed - not to mention easier to make in large quantities, usually.
Pursing his lips slightly, he adds, "Perhaps ve should consider the pros and cons of sharing more technology vith India if he is having trouble vith Pakistan - that might help him more than men vould." But it could also backfire spectacularly. Sharing technology with a less developed nation is always a bit tricky like that. It's one thing to offer slight upgrades to what a country already has - they already pretty much know how to use it without abusing it. Giving the same thing to someone for whom it would be a ground-breaking improvement, on the other hand, rarely goes off without a hitch. On the other hand... "You should ask your men to find out hov much help Pakistan is getting from the Joint Pact," he notes, because if that's why India is having difficulty, not providing at least identical help to their own ally would throw off the balance of the war between the two nations - and the Alliance can't afford to lose India.

Everything is considered and stocked carefully as Kiku listens to Germany. There are times he could have interrupted with answer, but he’d declined until it seemed that for the moment Ludwig is finished and is now awaiting the other nation’s thoughts. Japan pushes himself up and his arms reached into the air before he picks at his hair. It is mussed from their excursions.
“I am ready to start producing heavy artillery,” are the first words from his mouth. There are some battles best fought in close combat, but war these days is about survival. How do you ensure to the best of your abilities the minimal amount of causalities? That is the job of larger weapons. The Eastern European front should be considered a place for such a thing. Armies do not set about pre-conceived meetings. It is about stealth and surprise these days and if there is a nation who is extremely effective at such methods it is the nation who rests atop the German. “But these weapons are not just for my army. My alignment was decided and I suppose the Pact did predict rightly. I would have given you and the rest of the Allegiance the majority of my support. I could not in good conscience give weapons to a force focused on world domination.”
He looks around for some of his missing clothing. He is in his own home, his pants would suffice. “I promised to make you lunch. Let’s talk about your thoughts on heavy artillery while I prepare our meal. Afterwards I can take you to see what I’ve come up with on both the personal and heavy weapons fronts,” he turns back to Germany with a smile. “And I will ask my men to find how much the Pact is aiding Pakistan. I will not let India fall if I can help it. I know none of us will.”
With a breath he slips off Germany’s middle and locates his pants. As he slips them on his mind is on business, but he can’t help but gaze wistfully at the nation still on his bed. Perhaps they can unite once more before Ludwig must leave, but that is a question for later. He is hungry and business is best spoken of with food.

"Then I vill give you my thoughts vhile I'm here," Germany replies instantly, even though he frowns inwardly. He really doesn't like the idea of Japan joining the larger war at all, let alone so soon as to start producing artillery. On the other hand, he'd hardly let Japan go into war without the best support that he can offer - and ideas and innovations are far more valuable than men and supplies.
The moment that Kiku sits up, likely in preparation to get up completely, he misses his presence. But alas they can't lay around together forever. So instead he sighs inwardly and again feels the impulse to try to catch up on sleep. Instead, for the moment at least, he's too intent on their conversation. And he gives a mildly amused smile as he comments, "Ja, and I'm not in the business of vorld domination anymore." Well, not as a conqueror, anyway. He'll admit to attempting to dominate the world's auto market and other such things, but of course that was more in peace time.
Though he'd otherwise be reluctant to join Japan in attempting to restore himself to some state of being dressed, the thought of lunch and discussions of weaponry (one of his favorite subjects!) is enough to get himself moving - he can delay sleep awhile longer for that! "That sounds very good," he replies as he stands and looks through the scattered clothing for what he wants. This isn't his home, but in the privacy of Kiku's home he doesn't see the need to locate more than his own pants - and that more for warmth than anything. He may be quite conservative with such things in public, but there's no need for that here and he's certainly not ashamed of his appearance.
Finding them, he adds, "And the Pact vill get no more nations if I can help it - not even one." Which is of course a very difficult thing to try to accomplish, but he's determined. Unfortunately, the war must dominate not only his but the thoughts of many nations right now. There is so much to do, and so much he needs to accomplish during this visit that he very well might hold off on sleep until he's flying back over the Pacific and is far enough from Asia for it to be relatively safe. Especially since he has a few more selfish desires to pursue in addition to the necessary business.

do not forget me
About thirty years ago, Israel's boss was assasinated. By who, well, no one knows, but Israel immediately blamed Iran. Of course, that alone wouldn't have started World War III, even though Israel and Iran's various allies declared war in quick succession.
Nah, the nuclear bomb in the middle of Jerusalem probably did it.
Now? Now the rest is history. The world's been at war for thirty years, thirty years of bloodshed and pain. No one else has reached for the nuclear option quite yet, but no one's happy. So if we all die- well, do not forget me, okay?
